Show SPECIAL LEGISLATION WASTED A little special legislation for Utah is all that the "ring" now desire. They intimate that they have the Courts and the juries, but the right of appeal beyond these Courts, to the Supreme Court of the United States, is a barrier yet to be overcome; and all that is needed is a little special legislation legisla-tion by Congress, making the District Courts and the Supreme Court of Utah final in all matters relating to the Territory, Ter-ritory, and refusing the right of appeal beyond them. Would any party in the country believe that such an infamous in-famous infamy could be seriously entertained enter-tained or openly avowed by any of the officials of a Territory of the United States? Yet the avowal has been made, here in Salt Lake City, in this year of grace of 1ST0. This corrupt and infamous "ring," finding the Constitution Con-stitution of the United States binding t i'm in the prosecution of their pro-: pro-: " :-. .. want that Constitution set a-1 1 -o that h shall not be applicable to .: 'JWiti'ry, and wish the full, ab so u.e, dictatorial power vested in olllcials who are the self-pronounced enemies of the people! Is anything further needed to show how desperate is their cause, and how utterly unconstitutional, base and vile are the means to which they would re-ort to accomplish their purpose of ruling or ruining Utah ? And they talk of liberty! they prate of free government gov-ernment I they, who seek to enforce by any and every means the most despicable des-picable of tyrannies that of fanatical venality aud corrupt imbecility, in themselves combined! They do not want Uiah to be governed by United States laws, nor themselves to be bound by the Supreme law of the land; they only want to be made irresponsible dictators, dicta-tors, with the power of the nation to sustain them in their despotism. Will Congress oblige? We think not ; we rather guess not ; simply because be-cause it cannot. It cannot set aside the Supreme Court of the United S:ates until the Constitution is amended to permit it to do sc; and that amendment amend-ment is not likely to become law for some time yet. But the very fact of ihe wish being expressed that Congress should attempt such a thing, shows the character of the "ring." Has . such a wish been openly expressed by any prominent member of the "ring" here? Yes; and the proof can be found. |
