To-day the weather is mid, eu.-ty, with rain and sleet, and I'nie Mountain Moun-tain is covered with snow, with clouds and cold sun-hine, in strong contrast to the lloral bloom of our orchards and gardens and the light hue of the verdure. verd-ure. A nrieots and almonds are of the : size of hickory nuts, and the trees are loaded. 1 'caches and pears are out of ; bloom; aud apples, plums and cherries : are white with blos-oins. To-day I i picked the tir.st ri.i strawberry. IDeut-ziee, IDeut-ziee, iris, veibenas, wallflowers and stocks, tulips, pansies, petunias, lilacs, , lilie-i, tamarix, ,e., ure gay with flow- j ers. Kvery variety of fruit growing here promises a bountiful crop, and to all appearances It is safe from frost. Figs are showing an abundant first crop, and are now the size of cherries, j The transplanting o1' trees and vines ' is about over; the small grain of the ' firms is planted, and they are now busy preparing for cotton, corn, sorghum, sor-ghum, c. Through the winter and , spring thus far we have not had sutli- . eieut rain or snow to wet the dry , ground through. The interest in mining affairs h unabated, un-abated, hut reasonably quiet. Several lodes have been discovered in this near vicinity, containing copper and silver 1 and even gold is reported to have been discovered. A mining district of ten ' l miles square has been formed here, ' with E. G. Woolley recorder ; one at llarrisburg six miles square, i ! Hamilton, recorder ; and a district em- : bracing the discoveries south, with ii. Ueutley recorder. In those several I districts some dozen companies of citi- i zens have located claims, and many 1 private claims have also been made. 1 Specimens of ore have been sent to 1'ioehe aud other points for assay, and we shall scion learn more of the value : of our mining wealth. We are told that a vein of copper, silver and gold ore has recently been discovered near Washington, Wash-ington, and a party is now out in the vicinity of Fine Mountain, searching the auriferous sands for gold, reported to have been discovered there. There is doubtless great mineral wealth iu this region; time will tell. The health of our citizens is improved, im-proved, yet there are some cases of tiekness. There is a large corps of hands at work on the new Tabernacle, and we notice that the richly chiselled window caps are going up. Our courthouse court-house is progressing; the tower looks completed and the roof nearly so. It is a tine, commodious and handsome structure, aud would be a credit to any county. The Eio Virgin Manufacturing Company Com-pany are turning out at their mill, in Vashington, a variety of cotton fabrics, fab-rics, that appear tine and look well; and are realiy nice and would compare, with credit and advantage, with any imported goods of" the kind. The dyeing department is soon to be put in 1 operation, when colored goods will be turned out. The woollen machinery is also ready, and will soon be put to work, giving us woollen cloths, blankets, etc. We trust that not long hence we may be nearly independent of importations for our wearing apparel. The people generally are putting in au extra amoutit of crop in anticipation anticipa-tion of an unusual demaud for home-produce home-produce and more of the circulating indium that ail desire to possess. Feaee be with you. J. |
