Show PROSCRIPTION DISAVOWED. The real i.'sue iu the Missouri election elec-tion was whether political liabilities uoti!-eruent upon the late rebellion should be removed or continued. It w;is made a direct question iu that State. Both the candidat e for Governor Gover-nor were Republican. MeClurjr, the regular candidate, was in favor of continuing con-tinuing the disfranchisement of participants partici-pants in the war of the rebellion, unless nuch hud had their political disabilities removed by special action of Congress. Browu took grouud for a general am-aesty am-aesty and full political rights. The result has been the election of Brown by over 35,000 majority, while his party has gained largely throughout the State. This is another indication of public feeling on the prescriptive policy. Giaiz Brown, Governor-elect of Missouri, Mis-souri, is the editor of the Minsouii Democrat, the most strongly Kepubli-ean Kepubli-ean journal published in that State. It was a most bitter and uncompromising uncompromi-sing enemy of Secession, and no paper in the country more strenuously defended de-fended every measure for the successful prosecution of the war. But the war has been ended nearly six years, and Mr. Biown wishes to see the bitter feelings which have existed buried, and a united country marching hand iu hand to increased greatness and glory. There is a strong party growing up among the Hepubli-cans Hepubli-cans who feel just as the Brown men feel. In different parts of the South they are known as Conservatives or Liberals, the more rabid members of the party being designated Radicals. The members of the Republican party in the. North with similar political views have not organized themselves as in the South; but their reactionary views have influenced the late elections, elec-tions, and strengthened the Democrats. They no longer swear by the extreme policy of portions of New England. They have shelved Governor McClurg, ef Missouri, and a number of other prominent politicians in the South; and they have given an emphatic warning to all the extremists and pro-scriptionists pro-scriptionists in the country. |
