Reaching the threshold, the young man wavered, and refused to enter. "His hand did quake. And trembliiig like a leaf of a.-iien green. And troubled blood thru' his pale laue was seen To come And gu, with tidings from the heart. As it a running meenger had been." The rustic maiden, who was extremely ex-tremely anxious to see the marriage programme carried to a successful issue, is-sue, looked down upon him with pleading plead-ing eyes, and then, taking him by the hand in the most tender manner, besought be-sought him to enter the court and obtain the license. ''Uh, come aiong, Jake; what's the use of backing out?" fell in dulcet tones upon Jacub's ear. "Mulindy, don't. The old man will give me lits if I marry you." Come along now and git that ere license; I ain't a going to be put off any more." "I'll tell you what I'll do, Melindy." "Well, spit her out." "If the old man holds out agin my having you till Christmas, I'll marry you then, farm or no farm." "Sure?" "As sure as my name's Jacob." "Weil, let her go, then, till Christmas; Christ-mas; but if you back out then, Jake, lonk fharp." "I'll toe the scratch then, by jingo, if the old man runs me off the farm with a double-barrel shot gun, certain." cer-tain." And Jake looked as if he would. Thus reassured on being married by Christmas, Melinda drew oft with her Jake, fully satisfied, doutless, with the postponement. But if Jake docs prove recreant to his promise, we will wager any amount of meklcs that Melindy will go for him, to u-e the Tornacular of the uncultivated, ' like a thousand of brick." |
