Tho Leavenworth Commercial says: Sumo dayH since wo gavo an account of tho caving in of a well, about six miles! from town, in High Prairie township, upon a young man named John Self, who had taken a contract for cleaning it out. Sinco that tiino up to yesterday yester-day afternoon ho had been confined in a living tomb, under forty feet of earth, without uir or sustenance. Men have been working ever since tho well caved in upon tho unfortunate man, endeavoring to removo tho earth, but it was of so compact a nature that tho task was fraught with great difficulty, diffi-culty, and it was not until Tuesday afternoon that the poor fellow was reached. When found, lie was still alive, although his lower limbs were dead. Tho poor fellow was on his knees, with his hands resting against the side of the wall, a few feet from the bottom. Ho retained his senses until bodied, which was about 11 o'clock Tuesday night. Ho was buried yesterday yester-day afternoon. Pat. McCarthy, a well-digger well-digger of this city, dug him out. How ho existed for four days and four nights, thus buried in the earth, is a mystery. |
