The age demands' advertising ad-vertising on the part of business men. People live too fast and move around too quickly to go dreaming into places a-kingwherherthe articles they require are for sale there. Live business men have kept their names and their goods before the public, until the public has learned to look' for such information from all who seek their patronage. It may do in remote rural places or small settlements for people to do business without advertising but in cities where keen competition is carried on no man can succeed without it. Men will say they are not doing business enough to justify advertising, when the very fact that they do not do so is the reason they do so little business. It has become be-come an axiom among wide-awake men engaged in trade, that one of the first items to be calculated in expenses is that for advertising, and one as absolutely ab-solutely necessary as rent- We state these facts with a view of awakening some men in trade to a realization of the situation. There is likely to be lively competition here before a great while; there is considerable of it at oresent, but there will be more; and they who keep their names most prominently prom-inently before the public, having the goods to meet the public demand, will get the lion's share of business. Gentlemen, Gen-tlemen, consult your own interests. Be awake to the facts as they exist. Remember it is not now as it was years ago in this city. . Look at the columns of papers published east and west and see them crowded with local advertisements. Recollect that in this manner business is created and increased; do not forget that Salt Lake is next door to New York and San Francisco, with all the intermediate cities of importance; and think if you can flourish on a plan that has failed in every place where it has been tried, while your neighbors are acting upon the plan that is successful everywhere: Advertise if you would do a thriving business. CALLED. We had a very pleasant call yesterday from Dr. G. L. Miller, editor of the Omaha Hera'd, J. Sterling Ster-ling Morton, E-q., of Nebraska city, and connected with the Chicago Times, and W. M. Hicklin, Esq. Dr. Miller is a huge favorite in Utah, for the people of Salt Lake can admire and appreciate a man who honestly and independently gives utterance to liberal views and advanced ideas., We wish the gentlemen a pleasant visit to the Queen City of the Rocky Mountains.
