Show ANNEXATION EXTRAORDINARY. EXTRAORDIN-ARY. ' -' In Uie proceedings of the Nevada Legislature, under date of Monday, January 2od, as published in the'Car-- the'Car-- son Register of Tuesday last, -we find the following : Crawford, on leave, introduced the following resolution . Whereas Official information lias ' ' been received that the Congress of the United States will pass a bill for the annexation of the Territory of Utah to the State of Nevada (on the Legislature Legisla-ture of this State giving its consent to such annexation), therefore, Kesolved, That a committee of three be appointod to inquire into the expediency expe-diency of such annexation. ; Adopted. ' Bonnifield, Small and Crawford were appointed on said committee. This was in the Nevada Senate ; and on it the Register pins an article a column and a half in length. A- Territory, Ter-ritory, it appears, no matter what its importance or population, is only a thing to be handed over to whoever is willing to take it ; and so Nevada, with its 42,000 population is offered a present pres-ent of Utakwith its 100,000. ; Nevada has a State debt of about 650.000; the debt of Utah is just that amount less; or, in other words, ' Utah is clear of debt. Is Utah to be called on to pay the lion's share of this bankrupt little State, if Nevada feels kindly disposed to swallow us? r This is a matter in which there should be, and doubtless is, considerable interest in-terest felt in this region. Not long - since the people of Deep Creek expressed ex-pressed ' their satisfaction that the boundary line left them three miles east of Nevada, as their taxes in the State would have been three times the amount ?hat they are in the Territory, simply because the Territory has no debt requiring heavy taxation to meet , the interest. ' . But there is little need expatiating on the matter, since it is lefjt entirely with the Legislature of Nevada. The Senate committee appointed to "inquire "in-quire into the expediency of such annexation," an-nexation," we notice, is composed of Messrs. Bonnifield, Small and Crawford. Craw-ford. The first-named Senator is interested in-terested somewhat in Utah matters, as, we think, he is under S-5,000 bonds to appear at the district court in this city for being engaged in a certain money-hunting money-hunting expedition not a hundred years ago. Will the annexation business affect af-fect him any, or influence him in his judgment with regard to "annexation?" "annexa-tion?" ' We will watch the result of the inquiry by these Nevada Solons,' and then speculate on results and con-J tingencics after they have decided. I |
