Show Oi.R Poor.- all places where a populjiioti of si ho thousands are gathered gath-ered together there is more or 'less of want and suffering. There is no doubt that Salt Lake has its share of both; but it is gratifyin" to think that it is in a limited deg, j. The Female Ee-li"f Ee-li"f Societies have done noble woi k here, and we are pleased to state, so tar as information has reached us, thai the number of really poor in the cii is very limited. There may be mat., who are stinted in the gratification I their natural desires for the possessio. of many things which they cannot ob tain, but cases of actual suffering extremely rare; and the wants of such are promptly luiniftered to, when known. We are led to the.se remarks by learning that a call has been made at a distance for assistance for the poor of this city. Charity is always commendable, commend-able, but making a parade of it, and shouting through a long-sized trumpet for people at a distance to come on with their dimes and dollars is not quite after the instructions of the great Teacher, who intimated that iu such cases the right-hand pocket of the pants should not be made coguisant if anything went out of the left-hand pocket to relievo distress. What we ul jct to is this tooting the ram's horn iu such an exaggerated fashion, and throwing out to the world the idea that Salt Lake, with all its wealth, is either unable or unwilling to look after the very few poor in tho city. We have no objections to every lady who desires constituting herself a Dorcas society, so-ciety, and every gentleman who wishes playing purse-bearer for the needy, but for heaven's sake be truthful we will' not say charitable in your intimations, and don't proclaim to all the world the exaggerations which the colored spectacles of prejudice preju-dice may make you imagine you see. We think Salt Lake can look after its own poor, and f pare sympathy and probably something more to the wretchedness which exists so abundantly in too many places of the earth. Xow, don't say that we wish to dry up the milk of human hu-man kindness or stop the bowels of charity; let it flow and keep them open; only let the truth have free course, even if the devil should be annoyed. It may be a sensatiou to him to hava the truth reported from this region. |
