Show FINE PIII.VTIXG INSTITUTION. Our contemporary, the Piter t A" irs-, has lately been making additions and improvements of a character thru now leaves it without a rival as a printing establishment in the Kooky Mountains'. A visit yesterday to the building just erected for the press room and job ofiieo, gave us, with facts and figures, a better idea than it was otherwise possible to obtain. The new building is .jsi'S feet and is two stories high. Into it Mr. Cannon has had the large Hoe cylender press removed, on which the several editions of the Xtics have been printed for a length of time. He" has also received and had put up a new four roilerTaylor press, from the Chicago Taylor Printing Press Company, which weighs 12,000 pounds. The cost of this press east was $L500,and its freight SSiT. The engine is of five horse power, is a Baxter's Patent, and was purchased from Seymour & Whit-loeke, Whit-loeke, Newark, N. J., at a cost there of $1050, the freight on it being $250. The shafting and couplings were obtained ob-tained from Jones & Laughlins, Chicago, Chic-ago, and consist of forty-three feet of iron line shafting, with three pieces of counter shafting. On the new Taylor press there is now being printed a 5,000 edition of Jacques' catechism, with type cast at the foundry of the Xacs office. This foundry has been in operation for some time, and a beautiful quality of type is turned out in it. whick is another evidence evi-dence of what is being done in the way of home manufactures with little noise made a out it. And for this alone, if for nothing e!.-e, Mr. Cannon deserves well of the coi'imunity, for such steady efforts to advance home industries afford af-ford a marked contrast to the course of some who are forever croaking of our poverty, and sending all the money that comes into the Territory out of it to purchase articles that might as well be manufactured here. The Xtus affords, an excellent illustration of this. It is printed on paper made at home on machinery imported by President Presi-dent Young. It now can cast its own type, and everything that can be done by it to keep means in the Territory is done. The type machine was purchased now Liob k Taylor, New Yoik, and co-t, when laid down here, 400. The type metal is imported from San Frar.ci.-c5, from Linforth, Kellog &. R;.:l The job office of the establishment is supjmeJ with a Gordon Franklin pi:?, half medium; and a Gordon i-ianklin press, one-eighth medium; which are also ru.i uy steam. There are a!.-o in the job office nearly two hundred and fifty founts of job type, the whole forming a most complete e.-tubh.-h merit capable of turning out a very large quantity of every style of work. jur limited space precludes our dwelling at greater length on this establishment, es-tablishment, of which the Territory has reason to be proud. |
