Show REJECTED. ! The Republican Convention of the i Eighth District of Illinois, has rejected I Mr Cullom and nominated Col. Jona- than Merriam, of Tazewell County, for electjon to the next Congress as llepre-i llepre-i sentative from that Congressional l)is-j l)is-j triet. A few days ago we receive 1 a I copy of the Pontiac Herald, a strong i supporter of Mr. Cullom, and from a j couple of editorials in that paper weie ,! satisfied that tke result would be just j j what our "Fiash--i" report. Cullom j won a notoriety during the la-,t session ! tbut will live after his Congressional i i career terminates. Like Ashley, who i held the position of "hairman of the 1 Committee on Territories' before him, i he strove to have citizens in the Terri-1 Terri-1 torics placed in a worse position than j Russian serfs before theiremancipation. It was not alone the infamous bill di-; di-; ; rected against the citizens of Utah by which Mr. Cullom endeavored to make ; ' himself famous ; he introduced another ' embodying a few of the worst features of the Utah bill directed against Montana. Mon-tana. It is gratifying to think that his constituents have not only rejected him, but in his rejection have expressed themselves against all such proseriptive efforts aimed at the liberties and rights of theirfellow citizens in the Territories. We bid M. Cullom good bye, having hav-ing no antipathy against the man personally; per-sonally; but we accept the action of the republicans of his district against the policy he permitted himself to be dragged drag-ged into patronizing, as a protest which other politicians would do well to heed. Look to it, gentlemen. The American people are not prepared to gratify your miserable little spleen, and endorse your short-sighted and vindictive vindic-tive efforts against the liberties of a portion of the citizens of this great Republic. Re-public. They wJl drop you so quick, some of these times, that you will fee! sore after you touch gravel. Small officials, who think themselves large because government allows them to-draw a salary which they try to earn by meddling with other folks' concerns while neglecting their proper duties, will also do well to note this little matter. mat-ter. It is significant to them. |
