Show SELECTED. ! I Apprehensions of Bloodshed in j .North Carolina. The excitement ; among the people of'North Carolina at j this tune oer the military movement! of Governor Ilolden is quite alarming. -The niovemeur, ha bueu inaugurated ; by the Governor without the shadow j of authority and without the slightest! necessity. The movement is justified, however, on tlie part of the Governor on the ground that it is necessary in order to arrest aud punish Kuklux and stop lawlessness, &c. Yet there is no resistance to the officers of the law in any county in the State. Our courts are open and uutrammeled in their adjudication ad-judication of ail matteis coming under their juridictioa. There is Dot a sheriff iu tne State who may not arrest and commit or secure any kcown criminal crim-inal in their respective counties; so that the Governor's excuse lor arming the militia is believed to bi , by the best, most prudent and law-abiding citizens, utterly untenable, if not the merest subterfuge. The body of troops he has thus far succeeded in getting together is composed com-posed of the worst class of our population. popu-lation. The vagrants, the vagabonds, the cut-throats and rowdies of the mountain districts have been collected aud placed under the command of one ColoiielK.il k, a man of notorious character. char-acter. "On last Priday evening Kirk'i battalion arrived in this place from the mountains, en route for lialeigh. We hear of many outrages con mitted by them on peaceful and unoffending citi-lens citi-lens while on their way to this point ; but an outrage committed by them here aud the language of their commander com-mander will give you some idea of their animus and character. While supper was being served at the Mansion Hotel, a number of his command, who were promenading the tuvement in front of the dining room, began to fire off their p stols aud carbines, exclaiming, exclaim-ing, as they did it, "Iheyaie firing into us! That came from the dining-room dining-room ! ' and immediately they rushed to the doors and windows of the dining-room, dining-room, with their guns and pistols cocked, cock-ed, sabers drawn and leveled upon the nuollenamg and unarmed laaifs and gentlemen sitting around the table. A general stampede ensued of course, and the dining-room was soon cleared. In the crowd who indulged in this pastime pas-time was a lieutenant colonel. Kirk soon made his appearance, and although not a citizen had liied a gun or offered any resistance to a single one of the militia,- they insisted that they had been fired upon, and it was with diffi culty that a number of respectable and intelligent citizens, who had witnessed the whole allair, were enabled to satisfy sat-isfy Kirk that not a gun had been fired except by his own men, yet he did not rebuke them for this disgraceful and unsoldierly act, but drew himself up and haughtily exclaimed, "If a gun is fired into my men to night, I will not leave a hou?e ia this town; J will burn every one to the ground." This is the character of the men that Ilolden has got together to keep the peace and to protect the liven and property of the people of North Carolina against the Kuklux. Further comment is not nece!-ary. With such a man as Ilolden for Governor, and such militia under him to do his bidding, the nioie quiet portion por-tion of our people are giCDtly alaimed lest fearful conflict- will Le prt-cipitated upon the State, if it dors not, indeed, assm-ic th '; chaiaeter of that most to be dreaded of all evils, civil war. But there is really no earthly need of tifop-. Our pec-pie arc quiet and law-abiding.
