Show COMMENT OX ITAHS SEXATORS Vtnli ScJKttorsIiiiis The Republicans of Utah have selected F J Cannon and Arthur Brown to represent repre-sent the state in the senate It was expected ex-pected that Mr Cannon would be chosen and it was eminently fitting that he should be so honored Nor was it a surprise sur-prise to learn that ilr Brown had been selected for the other place as it had beg be-g known that he had a strong fol Mr Brown has many friends throughout through-out Idaho who are glad to hear of his preferment A great many people in this state hoped that Judge Goodwin would he chosen because of his special equipment on the silver issue and because of his long service for the entire west on all questions but these or so many of them as know Mr Brown recognize that the latter is an able man The conditions leading up to the nomination nomi-nation of air Brown were of a local character char-acter the force of which can be but little understood by the people of other states He was one of the leaders in the division movement five years ago and has since I been one of tho strong supporters of the Republican party in the local contests in Utah It was some time before the old Liberal party was dissolved and the Republican Re-publican party given an opportunity to gain the ascendency and tne Statesman supposes that the party felt that those who were in the movement from the start should be given preference in the distribution distri-bution of the honors This idea is borne out by the circumstance of Mr Browns only opponent or at least his only formidable for-midable opponent in the caucus being Judge Bennett who was also one of tho pioneers In the Republican movement as applied to local politics and further by the fact that Mr Cannon from the old Peoples party or Mormon side was one of the most active among those who brought the Republican party into existence exist-ence The Statesman can sympathize with those who have been governed by the idea referred to but it cannot agree that it was wise to base a decision of such farreaching importance upon sucn groundsBoiso Statesman In Utah Utah disposed of the election of federal senators with dispatch Of the Cannons who were in the field the junior branch of that Mormon family carried off the honor He is the son of George Q Cannon Can-non and is young It is said of him that lie will be able to make a good showing for Utah In the senate Arthur Brown easily captured Utah other seat in the upper house at Washington Wash-ington He is a Salt Lake lawyer Sometime Some-time ago he was such an aggressive lie publican that he got into an angry controversy con-troversy with some of the people who assumed that they could run Republican politics in Utah without his help Angry talk followed with the result that Brown sued the Salt Lake Tribune for libel and won Hence perhaps the Tribunes disgruntled dis-gruntled reference to Brown in this mornIngs morn-ings dispatch from Salt LakeAnaconda Standard |
