Show THROWING 31UD AT BRYAN Speaking of Mr Bryans campaign tour the CourierJournal says Some years ago one Dennis Kearney swept through the country from west to east and from east back to west making similar opeeches and carrying dread and fear to many timid bosoms only to subside and be known no more A few years later one Coxey made a similar raid across the country spre ding d-ing fear and horror in the bosoms of the timid and setting the precedent which Bryan at first intended to follow fol-low of trying to speak even from the steps of the capitol at Washington but he too passed away and now none so poor as to do him reverence It is surprising that a paper of such prestige as the CourierJournal should talk so about Mr Bryan no matter how strong its opposition to him Kearney was a sand lot orator who simply drew more or less attention because be-cause of his loud mouthings he merely I I h r tfitt > L a I represented a small but vociferous crowd in San Francisco Coxey was s horse breeder who failed and started an agitation in favor of good roads the making of these to furnish labor for the unemployed The I movement started by him soon lost its distinctive characteristic and became I the banding together of all the discontented discon-tented and idle of the country It soon II dissipated itself although at one time t assumed such proportions as to seem somewhat of a menace Between Kearneyism and Coxeyism and Mr Bryans electioneering tour there is no more resemblance than between I be-tween black and white Mr Bryan is the presidential nominee of a great party the same as Major McKinley is There would be just as much sense in comparing Major McKinleys campaign with the Kearney agitation and the Coxey movement as in comparing Mr Bryans campaign with them Presidential Presi-dential campaigns are neither unknown nor new to the people The issue this I year Is i different from the issue of other i years the methods of presenting them io the people are the same always i |
