Show IN POLICE CIRCLES MESSRS CHAfTTIA AND CIIJIL COME TO GRIEF The Former Goes to Jail for Vagrancy Va-grancy and the Latter for Grand liarceio Harraner iiied I Chester Chattin and Charles Chapman Chap-man received an extremely severe jolting ing yesterday in the police court for their bunco steering tactics Mr Far the stranger whom they buncoed out of 100 on the lock game was present and told his troubles to the police justice jus-tice Farr explained how he had been led up to a wild state of enthusiasm during dur-ing which he wagered the 100 that he could open the lock at a moments notice Chattin and Chapman did not attempt to deny that they had won the money bu surmised that they ha I given Farr a square deal and that he was a big sucker anyhow The court when the hearing was over filled Chattin who is familiarly known a the kid with astonishment astonish-ment a state of mind which is liable to remain with him for about ninety days Chattin was convicted of haying I hay-ing no visible means of support which in more simple words is vagrancy and I the court gave him three months at hard work on the police chain gang during which period he could have I ample time to reflect whether he would reform and be decent or continue his bunco steering methods Chapman underwent an even harder shaking up The charge against him was made grand larceny and his bail was fixed at 500 Dr Garrett went on the bunco mans bonds and his next trial will be before the grand jury E R Harrauer who has been languishing lan-guishing in the city jail for two days on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses and forgery came out of the musty precincts of Jailor Kim balls hostelry yesterday for trial The two charges were changed to one that of receiving money under erroneous er-roneous pretenses Mr Harrauer explained ex-plained that up to the present he had been thoroughly respectable and that he would never do that any more He also claimed that he had tendered payment I pay-ment to Mr Rae and Mr Swain and that the arrangement was entirely satisfactory to everyone except Swain who would be pleased in the extreme I to have him occupy a berth in the city bastile I Harrauer was fined 20 on each of the charges and likewise he was i charged for the costs The whole sum amounted to 4950 and as he was unable to furnish this munificent sum he was taken to the county jail I Mayor Glendinning yesterday pardoned i par-doned John Stringer the man who was sentenced on Sept 12 to serve fifteen days the peace in the oughouse for disturbing |
