today I to-day in the Reynolds hal The room was sparsely decorated The picture I of Wifllam Jeunlngs Bryan hung over the center of the stand and under it I was the mat Free Silver On the I right was the picture of Lincoln with 2 motto Free Negroes On the left was a picture of George Washington inscribed Free Men Over all was I the motto Our Three Saviors Grover Clevelands picture was hung In an out of theway place and before the convention was called to order someone some-one turned it with the face toward the wall County Chairman A D Gash called the convention to order and made avery a-very neat speech in stating the object of the convention When he mentioned mention-ed the name of W J Bryan the deletes is dele-tes applauded if Hon John S Boyer of Springville it was named as temporary chairman r Miss Clara Jones of Spanish Fork temporary I tem-porary secretary and Miss May Brown of Provo assistant secretary I A committee of three W 1 Roy lance Mrs Electa Bullock and Abel I J Evans Whitecotton the chairman referred to him a one of the men who were for silver first last and all the time Mr Whitecotton said in part f All the platforms ever made by the l Republican party declared for free sil tfcr until this year and the principles which I believe in are dearer to me than any party ever organized by any man When the Republicans adopted their platform at St Louis I said I i cant siand on that platform I will flsait and see And when the Democrats Demo-crats nominated that apostle of freedom free-dom pointing to the portrait of W J Bryan I found my place was in the assembled hereby endorse i I j en-dorse and ratify the platform adopted T at the national convention held at Chicago Chi-cago on July 7 1896 and especially and emphatically endorse that part that favors fa-vors the free and unlimited coinage of silver at tfiie ratio of 16 to 1 without the aid or consent of any other nation We believe the American people are becoming be-coming so enlightened upon the financial finan-cial question that they cannot fail to elect William J Bryan and Arthur Sew all by an overwhelming majority We finally adhere to that cardinal principle tf 4 of Democracy which demands that pub F lie revenue shall be collected only for gvernmentl purposes restricted within with-in the limits of an economical administration adminis-tration of all departments of the government gov-ernment federal state and local We adhere to the principle of local selfgovernment and demand that selfgyerment demand ours our-s te legislators a fa as possible will discountenance the concentration of power within our state and distribute the powers of government in local affairs fairs t the different parts thereof whenever consistent with public good p and especially to provide by law for the control of waters for irrigation by such methods as will insure a far as practicable the management of the waters wa-ters of the state by the people of the different subdivisions thereof We are unqualifiedly opposed to any legislation that would loster or favor the monopoly of the unappropriated waters of the state We favor legislation providing for securing se-curing to the benefit of the state lands under the munificent grant of Congress to our state and deprecate and denounce de-nounce any and all attempts by state or other public officers to attempt to secure the monopoly of held at this place on the 10th at 230 p m to elect delegates to the Salt Lake convention con-vention ton The McKinley Republicans are also out with another call for a county convention con-vention on Republicans Repub-licans with the regular Democrats The club was represented on the platform plat-form by Thomas Butterworth Charles Erikson and B H Baxter and by such heretofore well known
