Show I I GIVEN A HARD SENTENCE I Ttvo Boys Who iMole Hosfe ant I Jjawii Slower Charles Priestley and Holdem OCon nor the two boys arrested for stealing steal-ing some hose and a lawn mower were made horrible examples to other boys of their class in the police court yesterday yes-terday Each was sentenced to thirty days imprisonment and 20 fine Investigation In-vestigation by Sergeant Ford showed that the lawn mower had been stolen from Chairman Frank W Jennings of the police and fire board and the hose from the residence of Prof Flanders on First street When the boys were called up before the bar to receive sentence they appeared very penitent and begged Judge Smith to let them i go with a light sentence His honor 1 I however was not disposed to be lenient leni-ent He drew from the boys the confession con-fession that this was not their first offense i i of-fense i i i Sergeant t Ford he said came tome 1 to-me this morning and pleaded with me to let you go because you are boys and he thought you might reform But i I must make an example of you for your Vi good and for the benefit of others I you are in earnest about > I reforming you can do so after your j I sentence is finished j 1 I There was another case of a man charged with maltreating his wife and a refusal of the wife to appear Joseph Jos-eph Chapman large and lusty looking as cool and selfsatisfied as a Wall street dandy came into court yesterday j I yester-day and his wife was not coming I Set the case for Monday afternoon after-noon said the court and subpoena Mrs Chapman She can refuse to testify tes-tify but she must appear I Captain Bywater of the fire department depart-ment has a very bad illness according accord-ing to his physician and again yesterday yes-terday he was unable to appear to prosecute Charles Splain for using I abusive language The case was set i i for Monday but will probably be continued con-tinued for four months as Splain I wants to go to Idaho at once and has given bonds for his appearance Jacob Munz accused of burning rub I bish unlawfully was fined 2 and sentence I sen-tence was suspended William Carter accused of drunkenness drunken-ness will make a fight on the charge Monday afternoon The court adjourned at 230 and Justice Jus-tice Smith went fishing There will be no court today |
