Show At the Tabernacle Regular Sunday eric s were held at the tabernacle yesterday afternoon Angus M Cannon president of the stake presiding The choir sang the hymn Awake ye saints of God awake Prayer was offered by 3Jlder Henry P Richards The choir sang the hymn Author of faith eternal word Elder Angus M Cannan introduced Elders George McAllister Robert Patrick Pat-rick and Henry Martin as three returned re-turned missionaries from the southern states who would address the congregation congre-gation Elder McAllister was the first to address ad-dress the meeting For the last two years he said he had been laboring in eastern Tennessee where he had been paled by revelation from God through his servants and while there his labors had been a source of great pleasure and satisfaction to him As was natural na-tural he thought of the fate of elders who had gone there before but his experience ex-perience had been pleasant and he had found the people to be very hospitable I was a source of wonder to him that they would take them in at all when i was taken into consideration what they thought the elders to be they of course having no previous knowledge of them except from erroneous reports re-ports they had heard The speaker gave a brief outline ot the work of a missionary and then said there had been a great change in the southern states mission the people did not seek to gather as much as they used to but were endeavoring to buildup build-up branches and establish Sunday schools which they were doing with a great deal of success many people coming over ten miles to attend their schools The spirit of brotherly love prevailed there as at home and the Saints were endeavoring in their way to faring the gospel to their neighbors The speaker closed by bearing his testimony tes-timony to the truth of the gospel and praying for the blessings of God upon his people I Elder Robert Patrick was the next speaker He briefly outlined his experiences ex-periences in the South Carolina Carolna conference con-ference Like the previous speaker he added his testimony to the hospitality and warmheartedness of the southern people and also outlined the work being done there by the missionaries The speaker addressed himself specially to the young men and women and said that they did not realize the privilege accorded them to learn of the gospel here in Zion and that especially the young men should endeavor to learn of those principles so that when they are called to carry the gospel to the prepared nations of the earth they might be Elder Henry Martin added his testimony tes-timony to those who had preceded him and recounted some of his experiences while laboring in the southern states He also had found the people to be hospitable hos-pitable warmhearted and a majority of them naturally religious He dwelt i at some length upon the original apostasy apos-tasy of the church after the I death of the apostle and stated that the subject was hard for the people to understand They are pretty thoroughly steeped in the idea that faith Is all sufficient to save The speaker quoted from the scriptures scrip-tures to prove that this apostasy was seen by the prophets especially Isaiah The Savior also foresaw and spoke of it as did some of the apostles In the new testament He also dwelt upon the restoration o f the gospel and the proof the elders invite to do the will 6 the father and they shall know of the doctrine in conclusion BIdet Martin exhorted the young people to take advantage of the opportunities offered of-fered them and inform themselves regarding re-garding the gospel principles President Wilford Woodruff then addressed ad-dressed the Saints I was a pleasure to him herSaid tp hear th testimony t lc testmony of the young elders of Israel and he wished to add his to Those given He was baptised in 1523 In the spring of 1834 he went to what was known a Zions camp His first mission had been to the southern states He had traveled through Jackson Jack-son county Mo into Arkansas and from there across the Mississippi river to Memphis Tenn He was a Yankee and had the prejudices of one but under the influence of Ills mission he Soon lost them and he had then found the southern people to be warm and hospitable He had ordained Elder A O Smoot with whom he had traveled two years They baptized many souls Slavery was then legal all over the southern states and many servants had requested baptism of him but he had made a rule to always consult their masters for permission first holding I unlawful to tear xnwn a mans house unless he had first built him a better one upon his first association He dwelt upon frt asJclaton with the prophet Joseph Smith and of the prophesies which he heard him utter This is i one of the greatest dispensations dis-pensations of the gospel upon the earth and it will never stop until all the revelations of the prophets of God have been fulfilled He had heard the Prophet Joseph prophesy concerning the greatness of the work but he had little thought then to see this tabernacle taber-nacle or this congregation In conclusion President Woodruff dwelt upon the great change in the sentiment of the world regarding the Latterday Saints They no longer look for their SInts but are beginning to understand more about them and the principles they teach And he exhorted the Saints to teach their sons the goe pel principles that they in turn might be prepared to teach others Elder George Q Cannon first counselor coun-selor to President Woodruff was the next speaker He spoke of the joy which Saints feel In hearing the testimonies testi-monies of the elders the greatest joy which can be felt but which language is inadequate to express Young men I should treasure up the testimonies they hear and add to them by reading the Bible the word of God to man and the Book of Mormon which was translated trans-lated by the power of the holy spirit Deep down In every heart there is a disposition to believe the testimony of the Bible and when the elders quote it there is a spirit that testifies that it is true and their hearts L are stirred There is not enougn attention pam 1 the Bible He would rather have it for the reading of his children I is English pure and undefiled and anyone any-one familiar with It not only learn to use their mother tongue as i should be used but become acquainted with principles that will be useful to them In after life Under our school system it cannot be used in the schools but it can be In the Sunday schools and by the fireside and it should be read and by the exercise of the right spirit It can be understood The Book of Mormon Mor-mon also for it is the pure word of God and was translated by his power In conclusion the speaker spoke of the great blessings bestowed upon us by the Father in restoring the gospel with the priesthood gifts and powers and exhorted all to be humble and keep I their testimony burning by keeping the commandments The congregation sang the hymn We Thank Thee 0 God for a Phophet President of the Stake Angus M Cannon announced that the next semiannual semi-annual conference of the stake would
