Show JUDGE BARTONS SUCCESSOR Major Underwood Said to Be n Most Prominent Candidate To the Editor of The Herald The death of Probate Judge J A Barton I Bar-ton of Beaver leaves a vacancy to be I filled by the president and them are I already several applicants When Judge I Barton was appointed the choice was between be-tween him ana Major S D Underwood I the latter losing not through any lack of capability or want of merit but because I be-cause the formers endorsements were stronger Both were good and worthy I men but one of them had to be disappointed dis-appointed and tile one on whom this fell made no complaint but went on working for his party and principles the same as though he had been chosen I hope Governor I Gov-ernor West in his recommendation If he should make any and the president in his appointment will not overlook Major Jnderwood He was a gallant Union soldier sol-dier during the war and not even the fact that a goodsized fragment of his left shoulder Was shot away could make him a Republican He is an honored citizen citi-zen of Beaver City and one of the Democrats Dem-ocrats who suffered defeat in the last election because of things we will have omethins more to say of hereafter All he applicants are good men but Major Underwood ought to have the officeS office-S A KEN1CER |
