Business Jhransacted 3 Louisville Ky June 26A continuous continu-ous performance of farcecomedy lasting last-ing eight hours a rare vocal entertainment entertain-ment with soloists and a chorus of several hundred voices declamations and tinhorn tests of lung power made I up the programme of the sixth days session of the Democratic state convention I con-vention and it narrowly escaped winding wind-ing up in a exhibition of pugilism and gun fighting From 10 oclock until C today Central Music hal contained without doubt the most uproarious and disorderly body of men that ever gathered for the transaction of political or other business I busi-ness Angered by what they considered an arbitrary ruling of the chairman in refusing to allow an appeal from his decision declaring out of order a motion mo-tion to remove policemen from the hall over half the delegates set about with all the energy they could command to prevent by sheer force of lung power I the transaction of any further business until they secured a vote on the appeal ap-peal pealThis I This plan was successfully carried out until nearly 6 oclock this evening I when principally because of utter physical II j phy-sical exhaustion the filibusters allowed allow-ed themselves to be outwitted and the i i vote on nomination for governor which the chair had ordered early In the morning and had tried repeatedly to I proceed with was concluded by having i j the county chairmen or as many as would come to the stage and yell their votes at the clerk who at a distance dis-tance of a few inches was able to catch the figures Filibusters Were Outwitted The teeth of recalcitrants having been pried open the bitter dose slowly trickled down and before they fairly realized they were beaten a second ballot bal-lot wa reached this time with less tribulation These two ballots both fruitless represent the days work of i the convention After they were completed com-pleted all were glad enough to adjourn until 10 oclock tomorrow morning Behind this spectacular entertainment entertain-ment the three candidates for governor I worked like i beavers Today re was clearly Goebel against the field and I the Kenton county leader cold and i nerveless as ever has successfully de I I fled his opponents to combine and beat I him They may do it yet but so far they have shown themselves woefully lacking in ability to throw their vote in any one direction or keep i silent when it seemed best to their managers I that no vote be cast Goebel controls the organization of the convention and through i the state central committee and they probably will attack him here too if they can get together Todays events will tend to bring them closer but at present the fight is as open and as fierce as it has been at any time I Commencement of the Row Shortly after the convention was called to order John Rhea got the floor and called attention to the presence in the hall of policemen the inference being be-ing that they were not there simply to keep order He moved that he chairman ordered them removed The chairman recalled the attempt of Friday Fri-day night of outsiders to interfere with the proceedings of the convention conven-tion said the police had been called at his request and declared the motion mo-tion out of order Mr Rhea and other Stone and Hardin leaders appealed from this decision and demanded a call of the counties The chair declined de-clined to recognize the appeal and ordered the roll called for a ballot for governor Instantly the convention was in a turmoil equal to any of the exciting incidents in-cidents of last week The Stone and Hardin leaders made frantic appeals for justice and fairness A dozen of them gathered In the space In front of the chairman and with vociferous support sup-port of hundreds of delegates declared the ballot should not proceed until their appeal from the decision of the chair was put to the house The discontent dis-content over what were believed to be I arbitrary decisions of the chair bade fair to put a stop to further business Here occurred an incident well illustrating illus-trating the state of feeling A note was banded to Chairman Redwine and he sat down to read it Again the delegates became wildly excited What does your boss say Read it out they yelled at the top of their voices The note was handed to the clerk and read I proved to be a note from the sheets printer in regard to a shortage of tally Would Not Be Pacified C J Bronston a Hardin manager got the floor and urged his followers to restrain themselves asserting that the motion to remove the police was not made with a purpose to interfere with the work of the convention that I he would support the nominee no matter mat-ter how he was nominated but that those in control of the convention conventon should be put on record before the people Congressman C K Wheeler followed He attacked the ruling of the chairman I chair-man and quoted from the rules of Speaker Reed amid loud applau Judge Tarvin o Covingtun a Goebel leader upheld the chairman and declared de-clared that no appeal lies in a matter Involving the very existence df the convention The chairman made another attempt to have the roll called on nomination for governor but the opposition created cre-ated such disorder the clerk could not be heard Then came a deafening chorus of singsong yells the chairman beating time with his gavel After several minutes of this pandemonium a fac tius delegate arose Gentlemen he said after struggling strug-gling some time to make himself heard f < there seems to be a general disposition disposi-tion to sing Why not let us sing together to-gether Let us sing Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow A wave of laughter swept through the hall and then all caught up the strain and the hymn was sung amid surroundings that made it sound weird and uncanny not indicative of peace and good will as It mission Music Would Not Soothe But sacred music never had a less soothing influence I gave way to the old chorus of disorder dis-order and another attempt to start the roll call was howled down At this juncture a delegate rushed toward the stage Immediately in front of the charman stood a line of bluecoats blue-coats The excited delegate began to denounce the police the chairman ana things generally An officer laid his hands on the disturbers shoulder The convention arose as one man and a dangerous movement to the front of the house began Every delepite was I on his feet and wildly exciird This gesticulating noisy mass surged forward for-ward pushing back the police and crowding them against the stage Four of the delegates with presence of mind took possession of the disturber and hustled him out of the way The policejvho had been stoically listening tening to all sorts of denunciation for hours evidently took the matter seriously ser-iously One of them Captain Maher pulled his revolver His intention probably prob-ably was to protect Chairman Red wine whQ had made his way to the rear of the stage At any rate the crowd did not catch sight of the weapon or the convention might have I I I developed what has been momentarily feared for nearly a week a general I i I fight The cause of the disturbance removed re-moved comparative silence that was I not deathlike was restored One delegate dele-gate shouted I Mr Chairman I move the convention I conven-tion to meet at some future day in Manchester Clay county Kentucky I An uproar ensued and when It had spent Itself a Hardin leader in front of i the stage asked the chairman If he would call the roll on the appeal I No sir came the determined answer I an-swer Try Patriotic Airs I My Country Tis of Thee began the j I crowd andfor five minutes the con I vention took part in an admirable rendition ren-dition of the national anthem Patriotic Patri-otic music had even less quieting Influence fu I ence than religious i My Old Kentucky Home followed and the gathering became personal I Hang Redwine on a sour apple tree I they chanted I Meanwhile the chairman reclined in his easy chair his elbow on the table with his head resting in his hand fanning fan-ning himself complacently The dinner hour was long past the chorus was showing signs of fatigue and oratory was waning when a long headed gentleman of color with a big tray of sandwiches came on the scene I The white men assumed the burden with eagerness This infused enough life into the assemblage to cause a renewal re-newal of the farce To allow vocal chords to rest a round of whistling was started with A Hot Time as the theme S Chairman Redwine here showed the first signs of impatience Rapping the table sharply he said imploringly Gentlemen how long is this thing going to last Until we get a vote came the response like a Kansas cone and t I the crowd struJ up We Wont Go Home Till Morning At 343 a delegate came forward with I a proposition to adjourn John B Thompson and John S Rhea Stone managers and Willard Mitchell representing I repre-senting Hardin had for five hours been standing together on chairs immediately i im-mediately in front of the chairman directing di-recting the filibustering elI Chairman Eats Chicken They took up the plan with a readiness readi-ness that was full of meaning for the strain was telling upon them Just as an agreement was about reached Kehoo a Goebel lieutenant rushed chief out fresh from a conference with his chiefWe We object to an adjournment said he This thing must be fought out here and now The filibusters pulled themselves together to-gether for a test of endurance for Chairman Redwine had a big package in front of him from which he had just drawn a piece of fried chicken refusing I re-fusing to entertain a motion to lay it on the table The disorder continued without interruption in-terruption until after 5 oclock when the Goebel men hit upon the plan to have county chairmen come to the stage and cast the votes of their delegates dele-gates This set their frenzied opponents beside themselves with anger but the roll call proceeded the awful din increasing in-creasing all the while County chairmen came to the stage and the clerk had to lean over to very close range to catch a word that was said The Hardin men and man Stone delegates did not vote After half an hour of the hardest kind of work the ballot was finished and announced an-nounced as follows Goebol 352V1 Stone 261 A Hardin 67 The chair ordered another ballot whereupon Ole James a biglunged Stone leader cried ciedAl Hardin and Stone men refuse to vote I voteThey They wont do It the Goebelites responded defiantly and sure enough they did not and predictions that ha I been made that the weakness of Hardin I and Stone would show itself in the lack of control over their delegates were verified The last ballot the thirteenth resulted Goebel 320v Stone 275 Hardin SO By agreement between the candidates the convention then adjourned until 10 oclock tomorrow morning |
