Supporters and Methods Meth-ods Are Denounced One Delegate Left Hall When Bryan Was Endorsed En-dorsed Candidates to Be Chosen 4 Harrisburg Pa June HFour hundred hun-dred and thirtyfive representatives of the Democracy of Pennsylvania met here today for the purpose of nominating nomi-nating candidates for supreme court judge and state treasurer Shortly after af-ter midnight the convention adjourned until tomorrow morning without hayIng hay-ing accomplished the first and most complete pie of work cut out for them namely the selection of a candi date for supreme judge Nearly six hours were consumed In the preliminary nary work of the convention and between be-tween 6 oclock and midnight with an hours intermission for supper the delegates del-egates cast eleven fruitless ballots for a score or more of candidates for that high office the deadlock at midnight being apparently as firm as it was at 6 oclock When adjournment was had there were eleven candidates in the field with votes ranging from thirteen to seventytwo the highest being a long way off from the 219 necessary to elect The determined battle arises from the fact that the nominee is sure to be elected to serve twenty years At this writing the fight appears to have narrowed down to Judge Kennedy of Allegheny and Judge Yerkes of Bucks Each is on the bench in his respective re-spective county I is believed that one I of these gentlemen will be nominated in short order tomorrow The platform adopted eulogizes Bryans leadership but contends that I the campaign shall be confined to a fight against alleged Republican misrule mis-rule and Qua ism National Com mltteeman Guffey dominated the platform plat-form councils and its various planks ore said to be satisfactory to him Applause at Bryans Name The convention was called to order at 1210 p m by State Chairman Rill log Temporary Chairman William Brinton of Lancaster made a brief speech congratulating the Democracy on its fight in 1896 and 1S9S t His mention men-tion of the name of William J Bryan as fhe great leader of the Democracy was received with wildest applause He said the Democrats in the last legislature legisla-ture made a record of which it can be proud He predicted the election the ticket next fall and if an election of governor were held this year the Democrt would win by 1000QO majority major-ity He criticised the management of the treasury and said the freedom of Cuba was due only to the untiring efforts ef-forts of the Democratic minority in congress John M Garman of Luzerne was chosen chairman of the resolutions I leso We L committee Charles J Riley of Licom ing was selected hy the organization committee for permanent chairman The platform as prpared by the executive ex-ecutive committee M as adopted by the I resolutions committee A motion to amend by making a straightout declaration dec-laration in favor of the Chicago platform plat-form was defeated The platform is as follows The Democracy of Pennsylvania in convention assembled again renewing our pledges of fidelity and devotion to the sacred rights of the people true to the faith and principles of our party as declared in the platforms of our several I sev-eral national conventions and proud of 1 I our matchless leader William Jennings Jen-nings Bryan realize that the issues involved in-volved in the coming campaign in Pennsylvania are honest government clean politics and the redemption of our state from Republican misrule and corruption I corrupton The increase of public officials and clerks and in salaries is denounced and charged with being payment for political obligations and causing a deficit de-ficit of over 3500000 in the treasury and crippling charities schools and adding to the burden of the taxpayers Continuing it reads Quay Is Denounced We denounce the Indecent haste displayed dis-played and the disrespect shown the people by the governor of the state in the appointment to the vacancy in the United States senate of M S Quay I who to prevent a full investigation be fore a jury of his country pleaded the statute of limitation against the most I serious charges of crime In this ap pointment in the unwarranted reduction reduc-tion of the appropriation to public schools and his unauthorized veto of the constitutional amendment resolu tion he has violated the constitution usurped authority now granted to him and perpetrated wrongs against au wronS thority against the people and the state that demand his condemnation The course pursued by the Democratic Demo-cratic members of the recent legisla ture Is commended and the party as apolitical a-political organization commits itself to reform and promises to administer the state treasury after clean business methods prompt payment of school and charitable appropriations elimina tion of unnecessary employees clerks and officials In the state departments and reduction of salaries and reducton slaries expenses ex-penses A revision of the ta laws is favored to the end that corporate property may pay its due share and municipal franchises fran-chises be valued and assessed as another an-other property The adoption of laws preventing the further grant of munic ipal and other franchises in perpetuity Js favored On ballot reform the plat form reads As to Ballot Reform We favor a revision of the ballot law maintaining its secrec balot it secrecy simplify ing the method of voting and protecting the voter against fraud and coercion We also favor the amendment of the constitution so as to require a personal pronal registration of the voters in the cities and we denounce Governor Stone for attempting by his veto to interfere without right or justification with the legislative act passed for that purpose pur-pose and thus attempting to prevent the people from passing upon this important im-portant matter The Immediate prosecution of those guilty of bribery actual attempted in connection with the recent senatorial contest and their sentence to tho full penalty of th law Is demanded On the question of trusts it reads We are opposed to all combinations of capital calculated to produce cpita calculate establishment can tons not be constitutionally prevented we hold that they should be so regulated and limited by proper legislation that individual effort and opportunity shall not be impaired The party pledges itself to secure free fair and honest elections efficient eonomic and honest state and munIcipal muni-cipal administration and preventionlot legislation or the use of public money Philadelphia Philadel-phia said that since William Jennings In Bryans name had been mentioned the platform he desired to withdraw I as a delegate from the convention Mr deletate Cadwallader left the hall and John McXenanim of Phlldelphia was substituted sub-stituted The convention then proceeded to the nomination for candidates for supreme judge and the following names were presented Judges John
