Show M ONeil Replies To the Editor of The Herald I notice in this mornings Issue of the Tribune an article in condemnation of myconduct In the position I have taken in changing my vote to McCune I do no believe that the Tribune correspondent I corres-pondent is the proper channel through which the Democracy of Uintah Dlmoc county should speak The Tribune and its I cor respondentshave not the reputation of speaking for or aiding the Democratic party In < spite of the prt yawning grave two years hence and the Tribunes present condemnation of my course I shall still continue to cast my ballot for the man who in my bet judgment c will do the most good for our fair state As for the disappointment now felt by my constituents that win pass away with the election of Mr McCune i in truth there Is any such disappointment disappoint-ment which I do not believe Now as to Mr McCune His support sup-port today represents 90 per cent of the Democracy of the sate and includes more than that percentage of the material ma-terial Interests of Utah Twothirds of all the Democratic members of the legislature a for him The whispering that I have been influenced in-fluenced by Chairman J G Davis is simply rot This statement is simply r sm ply an unqualified falsehood I have had no conversation with Mr Davis on the senatorship Its on a parity with the grave yarn The correspondent Certainly tainly should not carry out this terrible terri-ble threat of burying me in the same grave with Mr Dais I need room and I Insist on a separate grave There are seme rights that belong t me as the representative of the people of Ulntah county and I will say I believe be-lieve they accord them to me with the When I came here it was wih understanding that as soon as I became convinced that Mr King could not be elected I then should vote for a good Democrat who stands upon the Chicago platform I cast rbrtyseven ballots for Judge King Then I bee satisfied sat-isfied that he could not be elected and time will bear me out in the statement As for being pledged to King I was not tut I considered that I was In a manner man-ner bound by the convention endorsing Judge Kings candidacy for the United States senate I wish to say before closing that I admire the courage of some men who take upon themselves to I speak for the Democracy of Uintah county but will not say s much for their judgment The article referred to should have been signed by the writer I do not believe that any anonymous scribbler who darent sign his name speaks for the Democrats of my county I am not antagonizing the interests or the sentiment of my constituents I have in my possession letters from the leading business men and most prominent promi-nent Democrats of my county endorsing endors-ing my present course My position is not only that of the representative of Uintah county In voting for a United States senator I cast my ballot with a view to the best good of the whole state This I believe is the broad ground that should be taken by all members of the legislature WILLIAM ONEIL Salt Lake City Feb 3 |
