Kin-ney Auditor of State Gilbert an the Hon H M Daughter who was his leading opponent for the nomination before the Columbus convention conventon Governor Roosevelt and his escort the TippecanO rlt1 Cleveland did not arrive until after 12 oclock An immense crowd greeted them at the station and the party was taken to the Hotel Buchtel From there Judge Nash Governor Roosevelt 0 Senator Hanna Colonel Dick and other distinguished guests went to the Elks club room where they ate dinner with the newspaper news-paper men This was an entirely nonpartisan non-partisan affair Afterwards Judge fully 75000 people gathered only a small portion of whom could get within range of the voices of the speakers Judge N D Tibbals presided President Ira Priest of Buchtel college offered prayer and the Columbus Glee club of 100 voices sang Judge Nash was the first speaker He said in part Judge Nashs Speech The Democracy continues to demand the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 Again the Democracy De-mocracy of Ohio ha declared in favor of this financial heresy This is done in the state of President McKinley If Ohio in November should take a step backwards on this question who can foresee the harm that will be done It will open the question again as a national na-tional issue Again we will be in financial finan-cial doubt and uncertainty But this will not happen The people of Ohio are an Intelligent people There is another very important matter with which the Republican party and its policies had much to do with in the last two and a half years Our foreign markets have been enlarged enlarg-ed and our foreign commerce has been Increased We believe this to be absolutely abso-lutely necessary for the present and future fu-ture prosperity of the country The policy of the Republican party is to strengthen and make ilarger foreign markets for our goods I is in earnest inthis matter We are just as zealous I I in this cause as we eve were in saving I our home market for Americans Save Our Home Markets This we propose to do even if it requires re-quires that governmental assistance shall be given to our shipping BO that our wares may sail the world over under our own flag This we win do even if it involves the construction of the Nicaraguan canal by our own government gov-ernment This we will do even if it demands that our flag shall never be hauled down in Islands lawfully acquired ac-quired by the valor of our soldiers and sailors The Democrats bravely shouted at Zanesvllle We are radically and unalterably un-alterably opposed to alerably imperialism in the United States Who in the world is in favor of it Imperialism is the power authority of an emperor I know of no imperialist In this broad land I know of no man in it who desires to change the spirit or character of this great republic re-public as it was handed down to us by our fathers Even those who believe that i isa wise policy to retain possession pos-session of the islands which have come to us a part of the victory which we J won over Spain do not wish to estab lish an empire in them lsh or anything akin to a empire 01 nnvthing Freedom For Filipinos I All they desire is to carry to their inhabitants the same enlightenment and the same civilization jn1ightenment cvizaton ie en I joy When they are prepared fof it it is proposed when congress shall act to give them a government free in character char-acter and guaranteeing to them the sacred rights which we cherish Undoubtedly careful and wise legis lation will be required both on the present congress and the state leiSla tures to regulate and prevent evils evis which may emanate from the large cor porations Such legislation we can safely lican party entrust to the men of the Repub At the conclusion of Judge Nashs speech Governor Roosevelt was intro duced He spoke in part as follows Roosevelt Talks On Trusts Our opponents denounce trusts but trust they propose not one remedy that would not make the situation ten times worse wors than its worst now is I have read through carefully the speeches of Mr Bryan and of his followers to find out what they propose to do I have found plenty of vague denunciation I have not found s much as a attempt to formulate a national policy of relief In the Democratic platform In Ohio Just two measures of relief are proposed The first that you should PIoposc tariff because it favors trusts and the second that you should coin silver in the ratio ot 16 to 1 without regard to the action of any other nation They pretend that the tariff favors trusts They know well that the greatest great-est trusts In this country the Standard Oil and the Sugar trusts are utterly unaffected un-affected by the tariff They know well that the trust with which there is the most wideprea and deepest dissatisfaction dissatis-faction the Beef trust is utterly unaffected un-affected by the tariff and in aete trif in my own state one of the largest trusts the Ice trust which is said to have a its most prominent member and promoter that ardent antitrust champion and advocate of Mr Bryan Mr Richard Croker is also wholly unaffected by the tariff tarf x Filipinos An Enemy In the Philippines we are at open war with an enemy who must be putdown put-down I is absolutely impossible to save our honor except through victory and it la equally impossible to win peace to restore order in the islands or to prepare the way for s lf oyer ment there save through victory People Peo-ple tell you that the Filipinos are fighting i fight-Ing for Independence This was exactly exact-ly what the Copperheads of 1861 said of the confederates Here in Ohio Val landingham ran on the issue that the war was a failure and that the independence Inde-pendence of the southern states should be acknowledged The feeble Valland inghams of today take the same position posi-tion and it Ohio is true t the great h L 1 ii I memories of her past she will give the same answer npwthat she gave then No man C 1 hesitate in this strug gle and ever afterwards call himself a true American and true patriot He must stand by the flag He must up Jy hold the honor and the interest of the nation and the only way in which he can stand by the one and uphold the other Is to overwhelm the party that assails both |
