Show PLAN BRYAN S DEFEAT P Eastern Democratic PolitIcIans Work to ThIs End + THEY MEET WITH REBUFFS I SOLID MEN CONTINUE TO FALL INTO LINE 4 1 Henry Watterson of Kentucky and John R McLean Strong For Dem ocracys Position On Silver Ques tionThe Situation In OhioDay Dreams of the Enemy Special Correspondence Washington July nThe small contingent of Eastern democratic poll tlcians who have been Indulging in daydreams day-dreams of defeating the nomination of Yllliam J Bryan and of securing surcease sur-cease of silver in the democratic platform plat-form next year have had a very bad fortnight Governor Hogg of Texas did the business wIth his Tammany speech which not only expreSsed the sentiments senti-ments of the national democracy but betrayed the fact that the great New I York organization Is itself honeycombed honey-combed with Bryan and Chicago platform plat-form enthusiasm It was the more impressive im-pressive In view of the certainty that the Tammany celebration was carefully planned to be a presentation of Judge Augustus Van Wyck as a candidate for president But there are other things which have aided to confound the antlBran cabal Among them is the Kentucky situation where a Bryan and a free coinage candidate is running for governor gov-ernor on a platform which is an outspoken out-spoken reiteration of the Chicago declaration decla-ration The permanent passing of the gold democracy is plainly Indicated by the attitude of henry Yattersons Cour IerJournal which Is strongly supportIng support-Ing the ticket The Washington correspondent corres-pondent of the rourlerJournal tells me that there is not a shadow of doubt that Kentucky wlll go democratic by 30000 this year But far more Important than the situation sit-uation in Kentucky is the announcement an-nouncement formally made here that John It McLean is a candidate for the Democratic nomInation nom-Ination for governor of OhIo He Is looked upon as a sure winner and here again silver comes to the front with a strong champion In the silver movement he was a pioneer and was from the first practically the leader of that cause in Ohio Indiana and Kentucky Ken-tucky through the Instrumentality of his paper the Cincinnati Enquirer In 1896 he strongly advocated a single plank relating to silver as the Ohio democratic platform in order to concentrate concen-trate the fight upon that issue He was also instrumental In having the unIt rule adopted for the delegation to the Chicago convention belIeving that by this course the power of the Ohio delegation dele-gation would be made more effective and himself head the delegation Ohio Democrats Hapeful McLeans candIdacy is sufficIent owl deuce that the situation In Ohio Is regarded re-garded as very hopeful for democracy 1 He has always been uncommonly strong i in HamIlton county which he carried In 1897 as a candidate for United States senator He is a man ot fine executive ability and a splendid organIzer and will male a spirited race Ohio democrats demo-crats regard the republican factional fight which preeeded the Columbus con ventionand has not Jet been entirely dissipated as opening the way to democratic dem-ocratic success and have placed the date of their convention at a late date in order to tale advantage of the republican re-publican situation Mr fcLean spends most of his time in this city and is very popular with the local democracy of the capital city whIch is intensely preChi cago platform He recleved the votes of the delegates from this distrIct for president at Chicago in 189 Sufl1clent evidence that the repOrt that Mr rcLean is contemplating beIng a candidate for the presidential nomination nomina-tion is afforded by the fact that every aspirant for delegate from this district next year is for Bryan It is significant that the very day McLeans candidacy for governor was announced Edwin A Newman announces himself a candidate for delegate from the distrIct In a card saying I aspire to be a delegate from the District ot Columbia to the democratic demo-cratic national convention next year H I am sent as a delegate I will do my utmost to secure the readoption of the platform ot 1896 with additional planks condemning imperialism militarism I and those despotisms known in Industry as trusts also that I will put forth my utmost endeavors to secure the renomI nation of our gallant leader William J Bryan Talk of a Combination The eastern correspondents havIng nothing else to write about are Indulging I Indulg-ing in a great deal of speculation to the I effect that candidate McLean is in a combination with Croker Gorman et al to defeat Brans nomination For some time says one ot the newspaper men who claIms to have discovered dis-covered this alliance IcLean has been looked on as a party to the Gor manCroker plans for Bryans undoing or likelY to become so It has been thought by some that If fcLean should run for governor it would be an evidence evi-dence of his determination to further the Gorman Interests the belief being that he could have no other motive In I running for governor than to get con trol ot the Ohio state delegation The fact that there is not sufficient evIdence of McLeans hostility to Bryan and the Chicago platform renders the situation very embarrassing to the Bryan people They are not warranted in declaring war on him aJ1d Jet they are afraid to trust to him the control of the state organization All this is more amusing than interesting Inter-esting It Is well known that Ur 101 Lean and hIs frIends are already in full control of the democratic organization in Ohio and have been since 1896 when he was made Ohio member of the democratic dem-ocratic national committee There is little or no doubt that the very conen tion that nominates IcLean for governor gover-nor will declare for Bryan in 1900 Distrust of Southern States The same correspondents arc endeavoring oring to show that there is a strong probablllty that some of the southern states will be carried by the diaphanous diaphan-ous CrokerGormanrcLean combination combina-tion It is not possible to find a single southern democratic congressman now in the city who will admit that there is the slightest doubt of the delegations from their states being solid for Bryan and the old platform Representative Henry D Clayton of Georgia who was chairman of the credentials cre-dentials commIttee at Chicago says his state will elect a solid delegation for Bryan Instructed and under the unit rule John S Rhea ot Kentucky makes the same declaration and three congressman con-gressman from Georgia who arC nowhere now-here say that state can surely be counted count-ed for for the old candidate and the old principles Young Representative Sidney Sid-ney Epes of Virginia says hIs state will be solid for the same things There arc no tangible evidences that any southern state Is likely to alter its position posi-tion Pretense of Loyalty In thIs connection it Is worthy of note that the republican International bimetallists bi-metallists are getting ready to put forth another pretense of loyalty to silver The first sign comes from senator W E Chandler of New Hampshire who Is out in a characteristic interviOw declaratory decla-ratory of his hostlllty to the gold standard stand-ard and a prediction of dIre disaster to his party If It abandons its bimetallic platform of 1896 This is undoubtedly the cue for the Wolcott Carter and Shoup combination Silver republicans must stand to gether and hold the party In line to Its I bimetallic declarations in 1896 As 1000000 republicans voted the democratic demo-cratic ticket three years ago because ot the surrender to gold forced Into the I republican platform at St Louis it can easily be believed that the new slogan will have little power in seducing silver republicans back to the old party As for Senator Chandler his position Is simply erratic lIe docs odd things just to attract attention On the question ques-tion of the currency he is as thoroughly committed to the gold standard as Edward Ed-ward O Yolcott and Thomas H Carter Car-ter It will be amazing if such be andbye bimetallists can deceive 3 sIngle voter a5 to their position en |
