Show FAREWELL AGAIN FAREWELL Our morning contemporary tries to solace itself with the delusion that The Herald is the only newspaper in the United States that has noticed its change of front on the silver question Attention has been called to divers comments from eastern and western exchanges and excerpts have been printed to show how the goldbugs received i re-ceived with open arms the exchampion of silver and regarded Its capitulation as an indication of the disintegration of the silver forces other excerpts were given from editorials in silver papers expressing regret at the desertion of an erstwhile comrade in the good fight The Nevada State Journal explained the Tribunes abandonment of the cause by saying that is hatred of Democrats Dem-ocrats and Democracy was greater than its love for the white metal This our contemporary denied but in terms which rather verifies than contradicts the Journals opinion says the Ne ada paper and its opinion was founded upon the reasons given by the Tribune for the abandonment of a national principle prin-ciple mainly for local causes coupled with many years acquaintance with Its editor and the knowledge that he hates I the Democratic party collectively as intensely as his naturally kindly heart is capable of hating anything over Under un-der or upon the surface of Cods green earth And the Journal comments upon the excuses assigned by our neighbor for renouncing independent bimetallism as follows The Tribunes reference to the history of Clevelands administration is more than farfetched The oflicia acts of Mr Cleveland were not onli I unendorsed unen-dorsed but absolutely denound > > y I the Democratic party in conventln assembled at Chicago in ISsS Notwithstanding Not-withstanding the efforts of the followers follow-ers of his administration the single standard element was represented by a mere handful of delegates who withdrew and left the convention in I full possession of the true Democrats of the nation who hold the organization I organiza-tion intact today ind who will continue con-tinue to hold it until the = eat financial finan-cial question is settlJ siMsiaitinly to the raeonle and for ail time The conditions are precisely the slin t > > day as they were at the ajjournmcrt of the last national onventiin ith the single difference hal the cause ins grown stionjrer as the lays weeks months and years have rolled by Mr Cleveland did not represent the Democratic Demo-cratic party in his course upon the financial issue i and that party promptly and emphatically administered Jts rebuke re-buke by declaring against his policy and placing at Its head a man who represented rep-resented the political antipodes of the one who was displaced The Tribune could hardly have made a greater mistake take than citing Mr Cleveland as authority thority for the Democratic party under un-der Its present organization or made a poorer excuse for its abandonment of a cause which was so strenuously opposed op-posed by that objectionable person The Democratic party shelved Cleveland and the Tribune is now acting in unison uni-son with the national party that holds the same views upon the paramount issue Is-sue as the man who was set fasldo in 896 to make way for the one who was f0 heartily and ably supported by our Salt Lake contemporary three years agoAs As the Journal says the Issue was squarely made between the two great national parties and there are a hun dred reasons for believing that it is more clearly defined today than It ever vas Bryan has a hundred chances of nomination at the next Democartic national ional convention where he had one before be-fore and the stand that McKinley has taken in favor of the single gold standard stand-ard demonstrates his hostility to free coinage beyond cavil now whereas it was a matter of doubt three years ago The Journal says that It has no Intention Inten-tion of claiming that the silver battle vlll be waged exclusively hy those who hold to all of the principles and tenets of the Democratic party for there are hundreds thousands of all ycr Republicans who love the principle r of bimetallism more than they hate the party that affords them the opportunity to demonstrate that principle through the ballot box But says the Journal all such will vote for William Jennings Bryan the Democratic nominee In BOO and there are so many of them and the number is so rapidly Increasing that the Tribunes following will hardly be missed when the procession commences Us march It will resemble the prove blal co > orals or-als guard j |
