Show A continuation eugenea Euge young answers the two republican questions put by J T M editor editor when I 1 finished my letter of list last week in reply to J T at I 1 had not not answer edthe two questions ho he propounded in his article ile he first asks if wool was so high through protection in the united states that manufacturers of woolen goods are unable to compete with the shoddy manufacturer why is it that the democrat when talking to sheep men wi will tell them that they would get a higher price for their wool it if it were on tile the free list lial iid had the gentleman understood my remarks he be would ime haic found that the only high wool iu in this country is the foreign wool which is sold in ill our markets plus the ta tariff riff it has to pay the tariff tariff is so high on this wool which must be imported in ili order to supply our home demands either cither as raw wool or manufactured goods for we only produce pounds of wool per year and consume nearly pounds that a very high price must be paid for it the fact that high price must bt paid for this wool makes it ble tor for the shoddy manufacturers to compete with the foreign wool with noth advantage to themselves this competition with the foreign wool baa ha already established the shoddy manufacturers on so sound a basis that they produce adulterants adulte rants equa equal to the wool supply of sheep and such threatening pro portions has this nefarious industry assumed that it threatens to kill the market for our home wool and make us wear altogether bad clothing the effect of free wool in ili fill all countries has been almost to kill tile shoddy manufacturers because the influx of the foreign wools makes impossible for the manufacturer of woolens to buy good ni material as all cheaply as lie carl can buy ilik bin adulterants adulte rants and so the adulterant makers cau can find n no 0 mar market ket for 1 goods the reason free wool would r raise a 1 e the fhe price of our home wool is because such a condition would create a demand for more woolen goods because woolen goods would lir ile cheaper were the tariff taken off any one can see that if there is MI it increased demand for woolen goods there will be an all increased d imand for the raw product and if there chere is an hi increased creased demand for raw wool prices will rise it is as plain as a simple sum sul in ilk addition that if we give the foreit foreign rit wools free frea entry into our ofir ports now they will not supersede the ameci can wool for there is now a markul market for all the wools wood of the world ou on side of the untied states and audio fu throw open our ports would material y is reuse the buyers so neither r prices of our wool nor the prices of u foreign wool will decline but will be made higher 0 the esperie experience ace in france G germany e r and england has been tha t when allea lea a tariff has been put on to protect wool the price of tile honic home w wool ool as well as of the foreign woo lias has decreased while when the tariff has beer beai taken off iu in these three countries it has ile been en found thit that not only did foreign wool raise in price but that home wool wooi did so in ili the same s degree the rile dext question asked by the gentleman was wasely why does the tariff on oil wool woof retard the progress pro gresa of the woolen manufacturer and ad advance vatice lie he of shoddy when lie tariff on shoddy is double the amount per pound I 1 nope hope tile the matter I 1 have written before will satisfy tle the genil culan asi as to how a tariff on oil helps bells the shoddy manufacturer but how does the tariff retard the progress of the manufacturers of woolens le in ili the first place it is known that the american manufacturer can compete in tile the english markets it in london on oil all m pods goods made with american wools tor for as ons onks englishman remarked to me american wo woolens olens and cottons are arc sold over london counters in competition with biti the llie English goods but it is another well known fact that our goods manufactured foreign wool can hardly compete with the foreign product in fri our markets this la Is because of tile the own wool tariff which has so raised the price of the foreign product admit our wool free and we will be able to compete with all the world in all kinds of woolen goods if the gentleman desires any more information on this subject he can address me at box salt lake city and I 1 will reply in your next issue but the 0 gentleman in his previous article said that england had grown wonderfully prosperous under protection tec tion and that has enabled her to keep up under free trade I 1 clip this from a book called the free trade struggle in england and I 1 think it should be eminently satisfactory to the gentleman As soon as great britain was freed from the incumbrances of w what bat is s improperly called prote tion that aspiring nation bounded forward to a prosperity greater greate r than it had bad ever known before 0 0 in 1840 under protection theio the foreign reign commerce of the united kingdom exports and imports not including bullion and specie amounted to millions of dollars in ili 1880 after free trade for 34 yeara year it was millions and anofia in 1889 it was 3 millions the writer includes other figures showing the same wonderful increase but they are too lono long 0 to quote the above is a sufficient example slid and I 1 think the gent lemans assertion with regard to En glands prosperity under protection is answered yours respectfully eugene J young |
