Show A KUOKD THIRTY YEARS I There may have been times within the past thirty years when a Republican could feel proud of his membership in tho party of that name Whilst it is true that had DOUGLAS been elected President in 1SGO the southern rebellion would have been putdown put-down quite as effectively and far more expeditiously ex-peditiously and economically than under LINCOLN yet a conscientious Republican might well feel proud of the behavior of i his party in that conflict But with this i conspicuous exception the record of the I Republican party is one disgraceful and ruinous to the country It was under Republican Re-publican administrations that the system of protecting eastern manufacturers was fastened on the country as a war measure and has been maintained to the present time at an immense cost to citi zens or other sections A Republican Republi-can administration is responsible for taking 100000000 acres of western land and giving them to Massachusetts railroad corporations corpora-tions with 65030000 of money besides It was the Republican party which converted a greenback debt of 51600000003 into a gold debt putting thereby a premium of 5600000000 into the pockets of eastern bondholders and their European correspondents corre-spondents It was the Republican party that demonetized silver in 1873 throwing out of the market one of the mottle used by the people to pay their debts with and in I 1S9L ordered the coinago of it to cease It is the Republican party which takes the peoples money and gives it to shipbuilders shipbuild-ers and sugar raisers and protectionist manufacturers to turn part of it against thorn to carry elections for their party It is the Republican party which concocts force bills and which gags free speech in the halls of Congress For thirty years there has not been a day in which Republican policies have not prevailed pre-vailed in this country Out of these thirty years Mr CLEVELAND was President for four years but in all this time the Senate was Republican and prevented the passage of any Democratic measure The Democrats Demo-crats controlled the House of Representatives Representa-tives under two Republican administrations administra-tions and in ISiS the BLAND silver bill partially restoring silver was passed by the Democrats over a Republican Presidents Presi-dents veto Of course it was a Republican Republi-can Congress that repealed this law and degraded silver Democrats in the House made two effortswith the MORRISON and the MILLS billsto reduce tho war tariff and they were both defeated by the Republicans Repub-licans Ana it was a Republican Congress the last one that passed a new tariff raising rais-ing the war duties higher than ever This tariff bill was so unjust ana sectional so offensive to a great majority of the people that some of the most loyal and radical of the Republican Senators Messrs PATTERSON PAT-TERSON PCTTIGREW PLUMB felt constrained con-strained by their consciences to vote against it This is a part of the Republican record for thirty years It does not include the carpetbagger reconstruction policies nor the other measures devised ostensibly to protect the union people of the south but really intended to hold the south down whilst the eastern monopolists were robbing the west Nor does it embrace a catalogue of unnumbered outrages upon a longsug feringand patient minority And will Republicans Re-publicans who honestly supported the war and who rejoiced at emancipation continue voting with the Republican party long after the issues of the war have been settled set-tled to enable selfish capitalists to lord it over their victims 2 |
