Show PEMBROKES POLITICS He Recites Two Former EtTorts to Start a Dem ccntlc Club SALT LAKE Crrr June 51S51 To the Editor of THE HKUALU As it has been contemporaneously stated that the first Democratic club was formed in Salt Lake City in 1SS15 I desire de-sire tocorrect that statement by the presentation pre-sentation of tho facts In the issue of the Salt Lake Keenina Democrat of March 2 Isso the following appeared under the heading Democratic Club a Movement of the People and for the People the Dawning of True Democracy Dem-ocracy iu Utah All residents of Salt Lake and doubtless of Utah who keep trace of current events will remember that immediately after the last presidential election the Democratic triumph was celebrated in this city by a double barrelled Jolitication one barrell of which went off halfcociied and made a great deal of noise while the other hung I lire A fact not so generally known however how-ever is that thorn were a great many young men in this city and territory whoaltnough wildly jubilant over tile election of Grover Cleveland were too thoroughly Democratic to join in either demonstration These younir men saw on the one band a party of individuals styling themselves Democrats Demo-crats who in their opinion were laboring to establish principles and create and perpetuate per-petuate conditions against which the Democratic Dem-ocratic party is and always has been arrayed ar-rayed On the other hand they beheld others equally zealous in protestations of fealty to Democracy yet who were led by men earnestly calling for a visitation of the sins of the few upon the heads of the I many Several Democrats of this city bad been taught to believe that the principles of neither of these factions were those upon which the Democratic party was founded and which it lies cherished that while the present rule of one section was most undemocratic un-democratic the proposed method of the other was still worse Among those most thoroughly dissatisfied with the deplorable condition of political affairs in this territory and whose devotion devo-tion to Democratic principles would permit them to cooperate with neither the Liberal nor Peoples party elements were J L Rawlins Alfales Young Frank Jennings Jen-nings Ben Shocks John M Younjr John H Burton Bolivar Roberta L S Hills D O Miner J T Kincsbury C K Barrett and H Pembroke These gentlemen discussed the matter among themselves and as a result of their deliberations held a meeting meet-ing in the law office of Shocks k Kawlins on the evening of November 12 ISM AlLeles Young presided over this meeting and preliminary steps were taken in the organization of tho Democratic club of Utah the following being the names ot those enrolled as members Ben Shcess A L Williams L be bent upon introducing the old church fight into the discussions of nearly every meeting with the result that the purely Democratic members lest interest inter-est and the affairs were permitted to lapse into that state described as mocuousdessue tude About two years afterwards a second Democratic club was formed by some gen tiemen of whom Commissioner Norrel was one and I believe he was president of the club Upon this organization n committee composed com-posed of J L Rawlins Alleles Young and H Pembroke was appointed by the first club to confer with Mr Norrells club with a view of uniting upon a common Democratic Demo-cratic platform In this case also too much church was drugged into discussion and coalition was found impracticable and the members of the first club or many of them awaited the dawning of the present day when all local factions ignore personal feelings and cling to the national principles princi-ples H PEMHUOKE |
