Show PLENTY OFFENDERS The Tables Turned 011 Officer i I Thornton J JOY KEEPS TWO OFFICERS BAY J A Pistol Forces Thornton and Shaffer to l Withdraw and They Suspended for Cowardice On Friday last W H Barnett a resident of Bingham hired a horse and buggy from John Butters of that place and coming down to Salt Lake sold the whole outfit for S 10 The police were notified and Sergeant Glenn arrested Barnett yesterday on the charge of grand larceny Ho was arraigned in the police court and his examination was set for tomorrow at 2 p m Gus Harris charged with using abusive language pleaded guilty and was sent up luc five days James Courtney J E Robinson and August Au-gust Anderson were fined 5 each for drunkenness About a week ago Mr Carrigan the stable man and a friend were arrested by 4 Officer Thornton on the charge of disturbing disturb-ing the peace They were taken to the police quarters and in 3 short time were released and the case was dismissed The officer claims that the men were actually disturbing the peace when he arrested them and also that they used abusive language lan-guage to him when he cautioned them Mr Cafrrigan however claims that there Vas no justification for his arrest and yesterday yester-day he swore out a complaint before Commissioner Com-missioner Greenman charging Thornton with disturbing the peace Mr Thornton promptly appeared in court but the case went over until Monday and he was xo leased upon his own recognizance During a row which occurred at Joys saloon on Second South street a few nights ago the proprietor beat a man over the head severely The injured man afterward went to the police station and made a complaint com-plaint against Joy and Officers Tnornton and Shaffer were sent out to arrest the saloon man It is said that as soon as they entered the place and stated their business Joy asked them if they had a warrant They replied that they had none whereupon where-upon Joy drew a pistol and going behind his bar told the officers that they bad not better try to take him as he was prepared to defend himself It is said that the officers took the same view of the matter and at all events they returned to the city hall empty I handed This statement reached the ears of the police authorities in due course of time and yesterday morning < > nand n-and Shaffer were suspended for cowardice Marshal Young was spoken to in reference to the matter by a HEHALD reporter last evening but he declined to make any statement state-ment further than to say that the men might be entirely innocent of blame and the affair would be thoroughly investigated before anything definite was done The v officers had been relieved from duty because be-cause of these charges but if they were exonerated ex-onerated as ho hoped they would be they I would be promptly reinstated |
