Show PLEASANT MEMORIES The President Speaks of H Tour with Gratification H FELICITY AS A SPEAKER It Astonished All General Hawleys Tribute to Him Southern Democratic Senators ara Generonq In Their Praise Special to Tax HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK June 27 President Harrison son left Washington on a special train April 1 He returned on May 15 In the month intervening ho traveled over ten thousand miles striking the extreme western west-ern boundary of the country a far south a Galveston and a far north as Seattle It was the under va most extensive trip ever taken by a President of the United States During the thirtyono days consumed by the journey Mr Harrison made 142 speeches Some comprised formal addresses of several thousand words while others were only brief expressions of gratitude to the people especially in the south who extended a most gratifying welcome to their chief magistrate It is not too much to say these speeches were a revelation to the entire country Very few Presidents have been orators and nobody suspected Mr Harrison possessed the remarkable facility which he demonstrated on that notable no-table occasion Opinions may differ upon the soundness of the views advanced but of the felicity which characterized their expression there is no doubt whatever Senator Joseph R Hawley although a staunch Republican is not recognized asa as-a personal supporter President Harrison His opinion of Mr Harrisons speecn isis is-is given here I have read the speeches made by General Harrison with uncommon un-common Interest said Senator Hawley Haw-ley On their merits they forma form-a unique and distinguished addition to the recordea views of American Presidents I think no public man among past or present pres-ent citizensol the United States expressed himself more wisely more felicitously or more appropriately thin did the President Conspicuous Democrats ore no less generous gen-erous A number of southern Senators have taken special care to call upon the President anil express their gratification at the manner in which discussed vexatious questions in their states A reporter of the World who has traveled extensively on various journalistic missions was sent to Washington to interview the President about his recent tour Here is the impression son impres-sion which the writer formed of Mr Barn sonHis manner is not unlike that of President Presi-dent Carnot of the French republic There is not the slightest physical resemblance but the minds of the two work on the same lines They view most public questions from the legal and logical standpoint and are apt to observe the rules of evidence in arriving at conclusions all of which are vexation to politicians Carnot was u pro vincal barrister a was Harrison and each was called from comparative retirement t assume the leading place at the head of his nation t I Then the President in answer to questions ques-tions from the interviewer about bis trip I said My journey vas of cure an important I im-portant event in my life As a working lawyer whose face has been so to speak held closely to the grindstone of active practice I have not hal the time I would have liked t spend in travel My visit to the south and to the Pacific country therefore there-fore was a series of daily surprises and I experienced a keen sense of personal enjoyment en-joyment and gratification from tie beginning I begin-ning to the end The mountain regions of the Carolinas of Tennessee and of Georgia I Geor-gia with the new industrial communities which have sprung into existence cannot fail to interest the visitor from other sections sec-tions of country The reception I received was a tribute respect to the presidential office and of hospitality hos-pitality and courtesy towards the individual individ-ual 1 can say without reservation that from first to last I was received with Kindness Kind-ness by everybody As I strain my memory mem-ory and review everything there was nothing noth-ing that occurred that was unpleasant or annoying during my tour in that portion of the country that is opposed to me I recall re-call on several occasions that small street boys ran out beside my carriage and shouted How are yon Ben with knowing know-ing looks on their eager childish faces I rotor to this to illustrate how observant I tried to be of all that occurred When I decided to go south I resolved to speak just a freely a I would in Indiana Indi-ana T did not propose to enter the controversial contro-versial discussions but if in the course of remarks made to me in public I saw anything any-thing I thought it my duty to answer I would do so without hesitation Permit me I t say that the regard for the national emblem em-blem the hag of our common country which I everywhere beheld was very agreeable Nearly all of tho states I 1 visited appeared to be extremely I prosperous as I approached nearer I and nearer t Texas I became more impressed im-pressed by the opportunities which are enjoyed en-joyed and are becoming appreciated by the I people I was received with warm hospitality hospi-tality by the Texans und iny trip down through the midland counties to Galveston was attended by a general welcome from all My remarks upon reciprocity and on the devclowment of the trade of Galveston which ought t follow among other things much needed harbor improvements were the result of my earnest convictions California he continued like Texas was a new country to me I had previously visited the Northern Pacific slope and the Oregon and Puget Sound district dis-trict The characteristic exuberenco of California hospitality poured on mo until I felt there was no limit In the frequent intervals in-tervals when not occupied by the attentions of the people I feasted my eyes upon the rich fruits the gorgeous flowers and peculiar pecu-liar and varied natural attractions the climate cli-mate develops I spoke when it was fitting that I should do so and the sense of pleasure which was engendered at the commencement commence-ment of my trip attended me throughout California and continued till I returned to I Washington I all men were permitted to derive a much personal satisfaction i from a tour throughout their country as mysel think the span of human existence exist-ence would be increased The President manifestly enjoys recall ing the incidents of his long trip but there lis I very little of the ego in his conversation converdaton He looks extremely well and a better I humored man you never saw |
