Show CALLED OI N THE PRE IDENT Distinguished Visitors Storm the White House A VAST CROWD PRESENT Words of Congratulation From Gojcr norg Senators and Others A Reception Given to the General Public All Anxious to Shake Sands with the President Second Reception Held WASHINGTON MUlch 6Crowds oi distinguished dis-tinguished visitors began to storm the White House early today and Mr Cleveland Cleve-land was obliged to forego his work and listen to words of congratulation from the governors of states senators representatives representa-tives and hosts of others Shortly after 9 oclock brass bands began to play in the vicinity of the White House and stepping out to their music came political organizations The driveway leading to the main doorways of the White House was soon packed with people anxious to shake I hands with the president The Samuel J i Randall club of Philadelphia 100 strong I was the first organization to obtain admittance I ad-mittance and it was followed by others I After the clubs came a multitude of the general public They poured in the main doorway in droves two lines of people in double file marched under the portico from noon till 1 oclock and in through the main doorway then into the east room past the bowing smiling handshaking hand-shaking chief magistrate around the apartment aud out of the windows of exit The president kept up this monotonous routine until a messenger came to his relief at 1 oclock and informed him that the Worlds fair delegation was waiting for him in the cabinet room Mr Cleveland Cleve-land left the east room immediatelymuch to the disappointment of hundreds who failed to see him and these were not pacified paci-fied by the announcement from the doorkeeper door-keeper that the president would return at 2 oclock At 2 oclock the president received more callers I is estimated that nearly 8000 people shook his hand during the day |
