Show Tho Nepro Gnzzard Lynched NASHVILLE April SOAt 2 oclock this afternoon a mob assembled on the square marched to the jail and apparently without interference by the officers took Grizzard out put 0 rope around his neck led him in a northeast direction hanged him to the bridge across Cumberland river in the heart of the city and riddled his body with bullets At 330 the body was removed from the bridge and carried to Goodlettsville the scene of the crime by members of the lynching party which was composed in part of citizens from that neighborhood Three other negroes also in jail upon suspicion sus-picion of being implicated in the assault upon the Misses Bruce worenotinterfered with after the repulse of the mob last night I Tho town had an air of suppressed excitement ex-citement all day and it was generally believed a lynching would be attempted but it was not thought it would be made before night A little before 2 oclock however Dr Davis from the neighborhood neighbor-hood of Goodlettsville made a speech to the crowd on the square and proposed a th t1 rrhn 1Y and the crowd rushed to the jail A en trance was easily effected and the lynchers soon had the negro in their possession No inquest on the body was held |
