MINES FERTILE SOIL AND ABUNDANT WATER FOR IRRIGATION I 1 C I The Garden Spot of Utah Selected by the Sugar Company for the 4 Location of Their Factory < DING south from Salt Lake city after traveling about thirty miles wo como into tho famous north end of Utah valley tho richest farming and agricultural country near Salt Lake city Fruits of all kinds are grown vegetables and grain are raised and tho farmers area prosperous and contented people This district is rich in minerals of GOING nearly every kind The leading towns are American Fork Lebi Pleasant Grove and Alpine Tho traveler on entering any of tno above places is struckat once with the general aspect of contentment and prosperity everybody seems to be enjoying life and to feel that what with the combination of a healthy climate natural wealth of soil abundant supply of water and scenery almost beyond compare that to move would be to lose instead of to gain The settler here finds firstclass schools fine churches and a community glad to welcome and assist the stranger coming into their midst In the summer the bathing in Utah lake is a very popular amusement and only a few miles from American Fork are some hot mineral and medicinal springs owned by Mr Beck which are as good as any in the country The shooting on the lake or in the mountains is all tho most ardent sportsman can desire ducks geese prairie chickens and game of all kinds being found in abundance < Just at present tho people hero arc congratulating themselves at having secured tho location of tho new sugar factory in the district This means more to the county than is generally understood Acres of land now lying idle will soon bo used to raise tho wonderful sugar beet and this means more money for the farmer storekeeper and everybody new settlers Increase in the value of property and in fact a real boom for business of all kinds This presents to the farmer a new industry one whereby cultivating carefully tho same amount of ground he is now raising wheat on ho can make double the profit and besides find a market for his product at his own door The factory is to cost in neighborhood of 350000 and this alone will draw numerous other smaller actorfos tributary to the manufacture of sugar and not only increase tho value of property but In all probability double the population in a few years time i 1DFiasas and 1init1g Tho same vein pn which tho celebrated mines in Park City aro located is found in this d istrjct and silver of a high grade is mined At the summit of tho beautiful Wasatch range of mountains towering high above and looking down on the green and luxuriant yalley below Is the famous Miller Peak with its snowy crest 10000 feet above tile valley numerous lons branch away on all sides with the neverfailing creek flowing away > toBnally Empty itself into the Utah lake Undoubtedly the most beautiful of these is the American Fork caflon with its rich ore veins magnificent scenery and rushing creek r iV Along another stream but a few miles in another direction is tho Alta district the home of the famous Emma Flagstaff Richmond SouthStar and other noted mines While along another stream close at hand is the Silver Lake district with its dozens of productive mines But as all roads lead to ROle so do all ore veins in this locality lead to Millers peak under whose broad base lies the great ore body which as it came up from the heatodjnass below darted out in tho various directions like tho largo limbs and branches of a huge oak tree In proof of this theory we have but to state that the famous Miller mine which is located in the peak from which it is named took out from ono ore body in the short space of three months the enormous sum of 1000000 The Sunday Queen of tho West and Wild Dutchman in the same locality have been rich producers and aro still famous mines the Milkmaid Pittsburg and Bell are well known mines and the New Idea is another which shows rich in ore The general course of the mineral bolt in this locality is northeasterly and southwesterly The Alta camp lies but three miles and Park City camp but ten miles from Miller peak along tho course of the belt The formatioa there is well adapted i for rich and poraianentmines the hanging wall is of lime streaked with galena and the footwal of porphyry The ores found are generally galena carbonates bromides and chlorides all carrying moro or lessjjold Tile ores found in the American Fork camp arc general the high grade ores and with them are found plenty of lower grades intermixed in well dehned veins Tho rock is easily worked and there is an abundant supply of native timber close at hand free of cost for timbering the tunnels shafts and for ore houses and other buildings A nice stream of water is handy furnishing abundant water to run a 10000 concentrating mill which is now ready for operation for concentrating the lower grades of ores All kinds of work can bo doa cheaper in this camp than in any adjoining and the mines aro easily accessible Ore can be got to the smelters which are hands very cheaply as there is a regular down grado from tho camp to tho railroads two lines of which arc handy and reasonable rates aro thus assured The maximum rate for hauling ora from mines to tho railroad is 333 per ton and SI par ton from station to smelters Of the leading mines in tho district one of tho most prominent is the Treasure mine adjoining the famous Miller mine The ore obtained hero so far is of a high grade running from CO to 300 ounces silver to tho ton and 30 to GO per cent lead All along the district are numerous good properties which aro being worked some to very good advantage and all at a fair profit The mines of Utah have never been fully appreciated by the iavestor and the need of capital has kept them back but moro and more every year does the investor open his eyes to tho fortunes lying under tho surfase of our sex and ho is beginning to realize the opportunities off jred for a careful man to double and treble his money It take money to make a mine go as well as tho mare and i if n lJre > of it was invested in some of tho mines in this district so that they could be worked to better advantage it would not be long before Utah would lead in the production of both silver and leal I AgL4icu1tttre and BrrigatiO 1e Almost every foot of land in the north end of the valley admits of fruit culture and in tho few cases where it does not it is certainly adapted to agriculture of tho highest kind and market gardening which will yet need more attention to meet tho demands of a large iccrcasao population of the large cities of Utah Here is land that will raise sixty bushels of wheat to the acre or eighty of oats or if it is sown in alfalfa it will produce six tons of hay a year and as high as fifteen bushels of seed that will bring in tho market t3 a bushel On tho mesas there are thousands of acres which aro to day the lineal stock ranges in tho world but which have notyot gotten oat irrigation canals to dater them sufficiently to make crops a certainty For these several companies have in contemplation the construction of reservoirs for the reception of Water during tho spring season when sufficient quantities could be stored to provide against any of the emergencies of tho summer Tho consummation of this enterprise would bring thousands of acres under cultivation which are now unused except as stock ranges As an instance of the possibilities of fruit culture take the following figures on the profits derived by one of the farmers near American Fork He planted out seventy prune trees three years ago and last year his trees averaged him two bushels to the tree and these he sold at S3 per bushel making S 230 fromonly seven eighths of a half acre of ground at two years old or at the rate of SHO per acre This year ho estimates 390 bushels from these same trees which will bring in 5330 ort the rate of 12 jO per acre Ho has also in his orchard plum trees set out only two years ago which will average from 1 to 53 to the tree Tnesa plums are the finest varieties and will averago from ono ounce to ono and a quarter ounces to the plum in weight Ho has succeeded equally as well on pears and his pear trees this year will avocago f rom 4 to Ito tho tree In writing about the northern end of Utah county it is difficult to cover tuo ground fully in so short a space Each town itself is worthy of a page Take AMERICAN FORK with its numerous firstclass stores fine society schools churches otc and you hare a town which will in time supriso the natives lijis bound to boom and that before long too LSHI is the same Its business men are wide awake and on the lookout for everything which they can use to help build up the town and they dont miss many things either r PLEASANT Gnovc and ALPIXE although smaller are still climbing up the ladder and tho others cant afford to stop too long or they will pass them Anyone desiring
