Show Powers opposes the Faulkner Bill WASHINGTON Feb 1ihe House committee com-mittee on territories gave a hearing this I morning to the opponents of the proposed I legislation to give local government to the i territory of Utah as proposed in the bill L introduced by Caine delegate from that territory The committee was addressed by 0 W Powers representing the Liberal party of Utah That party Powers said was composed of Democrats and Republicans cans who for the time being had cast aside their national political preferences and hud joined hands for tho purpose of build ing up an American state in tho mountains It was because the Mormon people peo-ple were honest and sincere that the Liberal party was opposed to the measure the time not having come in its opinion for it Much of Powers argument was in relation to several statements made on the other side of the question by H W Smith before the committee last week Ho read to tho committee a letter from M A Breedon an attorney of Ogden City stating Smith told him bel ore leaving for Washington that statehood in Utan would bo a groat cniam ity that if the Teller bill should become a law no gentile could live in the territory that he had no faith in the Mormon people they were simply deceiving the people to gain power and as soon as conditions changed the brethren would have another revelation reestablishing polygamy and drive the Americans out of the territory The statements made in tie letter were denounced by Smith as a lie He denied having been in Ogden before coming to Washington or having any conversation with Breonen In refutation of ue statements state-ments made by Smith calling in question queston the honor and probity of United States Judge Miner of Utah Powers read numerous numer-ous telegrams from influential people denouncing de-nouncing as false all charges and imputations imputa-tions against the moral and judicial integrity integ-rity of the judge |
