Show The Pedagogues CHICAGO July 15At the National Educational Convention the following officers were elected Aaron Gove Colorado president James H Canfield Kansas Secretary Edwin C Hewitt Illinois treasurer Among the vice presidents is Fred M Campbell California Cali-fornia Among the directors Ira G Hoitt California James H Becker Colorado T B McDonald Nevada Charles L Howard Montana William M Stewart Utah and Joseph O Churchill Wyoming Wyo-ming Oregon Washington Territory Ter-ritory Idaho and New Mexico are yet to be filled The following papers were read this morning The place of manual training should occupy in a system of public schools in urban communities and in large towns by Francis A Walker President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology In country districts by Superintendent Superin-tendent M A Newell Baltimore Kinds of schools to be introduced and practical methods of instruction by Miss L A Fay Springfield Mass with an illustration The discussion was opened by C W Woodward St Louis CHICAGO July 15The report on the committee on resolutions which was read and adopted asks for the more complete divorcement of school officers and politics the extension of the school year and the increase of teachers wages in rural districts the adoption of some plan whereby meritorious teachers teach-ers after long service may honorably retire the passage of laws to secure the attendance at public schools of all persons per-sons of school age who are deficient in the rudiments of English education and the fostering of the Kindergarten system The following are the con cludin g resolutions We express our profound interest in the education of Indians and Heartily coni mendthe spirit of liberality shbwn by Congress Con-gress in the matter and call special atten tionto the Important and encouraging results re-sults already achieyed 7 recommend to the several State Legislatures the adoption of the following Tifst requiring Instruction In-struction be given in all public schools i in physiology and hygiene with special reference to the injurious effects upon the human system of alcohol and narcotics Second laws suppressing the publication and sale of Impure literature Third a law bldaril lle Saleoftobabcotoyouths On motion of Mr Mayo1 a committee of three WarJJ appointed to communicate communi-cate with the appropriate committee iIt Congress f concerning resolutions of the convention on ihffferibjeot of education edu-cation Mayo said he had traveled in every Stat ffl the south arid had strong convictions that unless national aid is speedily effectedin the south the wisbed for consummation must be delayed for another generation |
