Show OUT ON THE HILL The New Penitentiary Building Nearly Completed The new Penitentiary building is rapidly approaching completion and will soon be ready for occupancy The contract for the improvements was awarded to the Pauley Jail Company of St Louis who sublet the contract for the erection of the building to Carson dt Co The building is now practically finished and presents a handsome though solid and substantial appearance appear-ance It is built of white brick and the inside measurement is 30x126 feet and about 28 feet high It is entirely fire proof the roof being be-ing metal and the flors of corrugated iron covered with cement It is well lighted and ventilated and is heated by steam throughout The contractors are under bonds to have the building complete by May 1st and John JRouoch or the Pau ler Jail Company Com-pany commenced the work of PUTTING UP THE CElLS about two weeks ago He has a force of thirtytwo men at work and is confident con-fident that everything will be finished in the time agreed upon The cells which are constructed entirely en-tirely of iron and steel are 5x7x7 feet and will each accommodate two prisoners pris-oners They are being put up in three tiers forty cells in each tier or 120 in all The second tier is reached by an iron stairway at the end of the building and an iron shelf three feet wide projected from the second and third tiers and extends clear around them On the third tier will be located that terror to criminals the dark cell An automatic lever in thelront of the building closes every cell In the basement base-ment of the building are located the kitchen and laundry The kitchen snow s-now used as a schoolroom with Ed Montrose as teacher Frank Treseder who has become quite an artist has his studio here THE DINING BOOM is a large and airy apartment The prison library is located there The bathroom bath-room is supplied with six tubs At present pres-ent there are 203 male and three female prisoners confined in the Pen The more serious minded of them attoad the school and devote the remainder of their time to study whle the rest devote de-vote themselves to games and the manufacture man-ufacture of a great variety of articles from hair and wood In one bunkhouse bunk-house 20x20 feet fortyeight men sleep in another which is somewhat larger fiftytwo prisoners are crowded while sixty men find sleeping accommodations I accommo-dations in a third These hovels will be torn down as soon as the new quarters are ready for occupancy where the the prisoners will be eiven more comfortable com-fortable accommodations |
