Show INTO A CORNER At last we are going to get at the straight of the SurveyorGeneral De ment sensation The story was published pub-lished simultaneously in at least three Chicago and one New York papers though evidently written in each instance in-stance by a different hand indicating that at leat four correspondents had heard the tale Dement having denied that he said the things attributed to L him three correspondents have asked the Senate committee on public lands for the privilege of going before that body and explaining how they obtained the information The request has been granted and today the newspaper news-paper fellows will tell their tale Meantime Mean-time one of them volunteers the statement state-ment in advance that Dement gave him the paper one which to write the notes as the SurveyorGeneral t detailed his charges We did not think the correspondents of such papers ass ° as-s the Chicago Times Inter Ocean and Mail I and the New York Graphic would rest quietly under the allegation that they t had invented the outrageous story 1 which they telegraphed to their journals last Friday To manufacture a tale of this character would be equivalent to sending in their resignations forgreat newspapers So not employ writers who will thus willfully and maliciously lie recklessly blackening mens characters for the sole purpose of filling columns with sensational matter There is probably no one in this city tsho doubts or has ever doubted that Dement was at the bottom of the slanderous slan-derous allegations though he may not have thought the story was to get into the newspapers The matter I is not of the character suggesting its Inveniloll by cdrrespOljtlealsj 6h th < J contrary it bears evidence Of hating teen given to the reporters for a purpose pur-pose Should the correspondents make it plain that Dement is the author of the malicious and libelous assault upon the officials and people of Utah it ought to be satisfactory proof to the Senate that he is an unfit man to occupy a Federal office and his nomination should be Dejected as a consequence Anxious as the people of Utah are that the Federal civil force here be changed they are not desirous of changes which turrrout honfest able and efficient Republicans fe > r Democratic jackanapes and irres pcnsible venders of libels |
