Show I WASHINGTON TVHISPEKS WASHINGTON January 3In the Senate Sen-ate today Senator Cameron from the committee on naval affairs reported favorably fa-vorably his bill authorizing the President Presi-dent to appoint from civil life an assistant as-sistant Secretary of the Navy at a salary sal-ary ot 4000 The civil service commissioners today to-day had an informal conference with the House committee on reform in the civil service In reply to Mr Blanchard Blan-chard of Louisiana the commissioners said they thought it would require an amendment to the civil service law to allow the Commission in making appointment ap-pointment to take into consideration the number of employees already in II office from the various States I They did not consider such an I amendment wise however as it would tend toW render the whole civil I service system unpopular with the north and west because under it the south would get nearly all the offices and thus open up the sectional question ques-tion Under the law the south is now getting its share of the offlces and I would in time have its proportion ot the offices Commissioners didnot think it wise to do anything which I would make the law unpopular in the north where its strength now principally princi-pally lies The Secretary of the Interior today entered a rule on the Atlantic Pacific Railroad uompany returnable on March 3d next to show cause why so much of the orders withdrawal aswere dated April 23d 1873 and not 23d 1874 for the public land on the alleged road of the Atlantic Pacific Pa-cific Company from San Buenaventura the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco should not be revoked and the land embraced therein restOred Something over 4500000 acres are said tobe involved in-volved 4 |
