YokE August 4 845 nm Eamuel J Tilden has jut died Samuel J Tilden died peacefully at Grej stone this moraine at 8 45 oclock There were present with him Doctors Charles E Simonds and Samuel Swft hind Ms niece Miss Gould His death was entirely unexpected and was caused by failure of the heart followim an acute attack of diarrhoea and nausea As soon It i the tit w3 oI ludena death was received in silting on the stoop of his lesiJeute after sundown sun-down on that evening he wa taken with a slight chill which etiled on his stomrch and bowels producing ii1am mation from which he suffered all night On Sunday evening he felt I much worse and continued to grow I weaker out until last night there were no fears of the consequences This I morning it became appaieut that the end wa near lr proclama-tion I announce to the peopl of the State with sincere regret the delta of Samuel J Tildea Aftfcr a long and active C4 devoted to the public good and the rendition of arduous and conspicuous 1 con-spicuous services in behalf of tbe j II people he this morning peacefully 1 passed ay at his chosen retreat at I Greystone on the banks of be Hudson I The country loses one of its ablest I statesmen and the State of New York one 01 its foremost ciUaens He ws I I twice representative in the state Legislature Legis-lature member of two constitutional i conventions Governor of tbe tae for two years and In 1878 he was the candidate I can-didate of cue of the greatest parties of the country for presidency received I therefor The largest vote ot hL native I State and upon that popular vote was I I declared the cht ice ot the majority Of the voters of the United States As a private citizen and in every public station sta-tion he was pure and upright and discharged every trust with conspicuous conspicu-ous fidelity His Ist public utterance which attracted universal attention exhibited the same spirit of unselfish patriotism which cnaracteroed his whole oareer and was in behalf August 4The MabiuuiX of this afternoon contains the following authentic statement of Tildens last hours Dr Simmonds hlaplmicianwho lives next to Greystone sars that Tilden had been in his usualy good health during the last four months Ho bad taken great pleasure in his home his green houses his caqice live stock his yacht Viking and in reading and entertaining his friends He was attacked at-tacked by nauseau end diarrhoea on Sunday afternoon but this vielded to mild treatment to that on Mon ay be was able to take a ride He continued I in his usual health until Tuesdav afternoon after-noon when the nauseau and diarrhoea returned He however passed some time In his library lib-rary in the evening as was his custom On being assisted to his bedroom by Dr Simmonds the first sign of the approaching failure of the h art was noticed by his difficult breathing breath-ing while ascending the stairs He WA put to bed and carefully watched bruugh the night but his strength gradually failed At about 8 oclock tills morning Dr Samuel Swift was summoned sum-moned hy Dr Simmonds for consult tion On Dr Swifts arrival he found Mr Tilden seated in his easy chair in which he had been placed to relieve his breathing He bud lust the power of speech about an hour before be-fore and was evi ently near the end He quietly passed away within fifteen minutes after Dr Swifts arrival He died JD the middle room on tIle second floor 1 with a southern expo ore |
