Show I I l Ii LAJ30R PARADES f n r 1 The Celebration o f Working1 me nsDayln the East f J ti I 6RAND TDBNOtJT OF KNIGHTS h S L e Big Cities i The Processions In all the War With Bnndlta Heavy Rainstorm Eto f The Labor i Associations Grand r Display j CHICAGO September 6The annual i street parade this city today was the most noteworthy ever made by the Labor Organization of Chicago The day was warm but perfect in all other respects for a street display The column began moving at 1030 and marching steadily wasnearly three hours in its passage The column was divided into nine divisions and a close computation puts the number and marchers in line at between 3000 and 35000 The feature of the parade was contained in the remarkable uniformity I shown by each division of marchers the latter all being equipped with canes and generally wearing slouch hats of 1 gray or dark colors All the trades marched in columns of fours well closed up and generally moving with great precision and regularity The column of 500 employes of the band safe manufacturers wore white tiles The column of journeymen tailors numbering 1000 wore white derbys and presented probably the finest appearance of any distinct body of marchers An American flag was carried by each division One of the trucks in line carried car-ried the hguro of a twenty foot giant stamping out cheap Jebor idealized by the figure of a Chinaman The procession proces-sion had an almost endless display of manufactured goods One of the Knights of Labor assemblies carried a banner inscribed avoid all politicians BALTIMORE September GThe demonstration dem-onstration of the Knights of Labor today to-day vas the largest of the industrial classes ever witnessed in Baltimore In many parts of the city buildings were decorated Gatherings took place in East Baltimore The line was composed of eight divisions NEW YORK September 6Thjs being a legal holiday set apart by the Legislature Legis-lature for the laboring classes it was celebrated by a monster parade by different dif-ferent labor organizations followed by a picnic Every trade was represented I in the procession which was constituted consti-tuted it was said of netween 15000 ana 20000 workingmen The procession started from Thirceenth Street and Fortyeight Avenue and moved to Union Square where it was reviewed by Mayor Grace The members then proceeded to Harlem River Park where a picnic took place and various games were engaged in NEWARK N J September GMost of the factories and stores in this city are closed in honor of Workingrnens Day 25000 workingmen took part in I the procession BOSTON September 6The labor day which is to be a permanent annual an-nual institution in Boston was inaugurated inau-gurated by the workingmen of this city and the suburbs to day in an imposing manner The feature of the morning was the procession in five divisions in which it is estimated that 15 000 persons participated The procession in which were represented art the laboring interests in-terests of the city was reviewed by the mayor on School Street and was witnessed wit-nessed by thousands of people who crowded the sidewalks J |
