Show REDUTIONF1O DDLARS I L OrP1I OLkA SA The Generous Proposition Tendered to Mr McNece f L > u 1 To tho Editor of Tna HEBALD I After reading in yesterdays HESALD the very flattering note of the 1Jev McNiece in regard to our citylcitiaens surroundings irr which our population popu-lation r ceived credit for several hen died more than we number in reality one might suppose that another could not be so cruel and hardhearted as to attempt another attack upon the Rev Mac But on reading tha gentle mans bold warcry from afar I noted every point or assumption which I do not consiner true or consistent First of which ii he McNiece bolflly I asserted without proof that tie Book of Mormon reveals nothing t But in this he will find h the t-he is mistaken Before the Book of Mormon was published to the world there was no authentic work on the origin and history of the aborig ns of this Continent This is what tire Book of Mormon purports to be Joeph Smith and twelve witnesses have published to hall kindred tongue and people to whom this work shall come and the Book o Moimon was translated from plates toe cnarac ters on which were in Reformed Egyptian Chaldeic and other languages by the power of God and not by Joseph Smiths knowledge of ancient lanmagea and so it took the power of God to reveal through the Book of Mormon a correct history of the ancient an-cient inhabitants of this contnent This is one and the first thing that the Book of Mormon reveals that we never had nor never could have found itj the Bible or elsewhere The Boo of Mormon Mor-mon also informs us in regard to the ministry of Christ on this continent of which the Bible says nothing only as Jesus said in Judea on the eastern continent when he said Other sheep I have etc This latter is ai item ot religious truth which Rev McNiece wishes brought forwar and now if the gentleman is satisfied onY this point I wont charge him < his cOr but if he will send me 48 in silver I will call it it square But methinks I hear the words But I dont believe the Book of Mormc is a true record No I thought not but that does not make the Book of Mormon false my friend and the evidence in favor of its truth is twelve to one against you In regard to Mr M Nieces proposition for a discussion dis-cussion the terms subjicis etc 1 am i satisfied that Messrs Pierce and Jones are abundantly able and < qualified to speak for themselves just as they may deem the Getter part of valor But so far as representative men are concerned all elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints are representative men of that church though all may not be preachers or debaters However in Mes rs Peirce and Jones we have representative repre-sentative men representative men of whom we are proud because they are not only willing but able to defend the principles of the cause which they have espoused and I am satisfied thab their sole object in challenging Mr Mc Niece to debate was not to establish their might hut right Respectfully J B BBIQHAM CITY September 4 1886 I |
