Show AMERICAN FORESTRY The f oimusr Meeting to be Held at Denver a J eL I I The American Forestry Congress in response town urgent invitation from the Colorado Stato Fore ItrY oct + t1O seconded bylhe Chamber Commerce of the City of Denver will hold its fifth annual meeting in that city in the month of September probably 10th or 18th the exact date to be announced hereafter The generous hospitality of Denver is so well known and the energy and zeal of the Colorado Forestry Association so well proven in its short but effective career that nothing but a hearty and wellprepared reception of the Congress and most useful and helpful reform may be anticipated The Chamber of Commerce offering their ample hall for the session have also appointeda committee to look after af-ter the comfort of members and visitors of the Congress and to secure a number num-ber of excursions in which opportunity for an inspection of the resourcia and beauties of Colorado wil be afforded The president of the Forestry Association Associ-ation Air Geo H rarsons in transmitting trans-mitting the invitation of hi society says We hope that you will come with a strong force to whom we will give a fitting and enthusiastic recep tion In no field can your labors bear better fruits Ulan here for the forests or some substitute for them are a necessity ne-cessity of our existence and public attention at-tention must be aroused to that fact With this meeting tbe Congress will for the first time move out of the sphere of the eastern wooded States over the treeless plains to their western border Conditions and problem will be presented pre-sented which have hitherto received but a passing glance in the discussions of the Congress While in the east the economic ques tion js paramount and the wasteful uses of the native forests and the destructive de-structive tendencies of our generation call for a check and for moral educa tion here in the west the great problem is the necessity and with it the difficulty diffi-culty of creating forests under most unfavorable conditions where nature probably crippled by the ruthless hand of the savage seems to have lost to a large degree its power of spontaneous rejuvenation In its eastern portion Colorado is concerned con-cerned with the same problems of tree planting which especially interest the settlers of the plains while in the western nart nf the State the 9 > roblems of our eastern wooded hillsides and mountains have particular bearing The questions whether and how far the influence of forest cover on water supply can be established whether and how far forest growinc will change agricultural conditions in the arid region re-gion whether and how far forest culture cul-ture is there possible and what the proper means of the reforestation of these wastes may be these are questions ques-tions of tha greatest moment |
