CORKHILL Guitteau today addressed a note to Postmaster Ainger authorizing the postmaster post-master to deliver to District Attorney Corkbill for such disposition as be may desire all mail matter addressed to the prisoner STEADY IMPROVEMENT 11 pmThe record of the Presidents case today is a record of steady improvement improve-ment Little can be added in the way of details to the facts in official bulletins and the telegram to consulting surgeons There has been no recurrence of the gastric disturbance of yesterday and the patient has eaten well slept wull and rested well at intervals throughout thb day The slight fever noticed at the date of the last official bulletin has subsided and at 11 pm the President is sleeping quietly without any febrile symptoms Dallas Tex 19A mass meeting here protested against Gov Roberts re fusal to participate in Gov Forsters proposed pro-posed thanksgiving and resolvod to eb eerfe the day named by Foiter and invite in-vite other Texas cities to do likewise WEAK I New York 19Heralds Washing Ion It seems to bevery well settled says Col Corkbill that the charge of powder in the cartridges fired by Guitteau was very light At a distance of forty feet the second shot spent its force in pene trating a glazers wooden box the side of which was but onefourth of en inch thick broke only three panes of glass aid imbedded itself in a lump of putty U DAINTIES The arrival of various delicacies in the way of food for the use of the President continues to be a feature of the mail At the White House today several cases of wine arrived and also some woodcocks wood-cocks from Maryland Dr Nichols one of the attending surgeons at Bellevue Hospital put up his apparatus for lifting a patient off the bed without disturbing him in the White House today The uoctors are going to inspect it and determine whether it can be used or not Washington 20 Esecutivo ManBion July 20 5 am The President up to this hour has passed a very comfortable night and is doing as well as can be expected ex-pected w Executive Mansion 830 am The progress oi the President towards recovery recov-ery continues uninterruptedly Ho has passed a very quiet night Pulse this morning 86 temperature 984 respiration respira-tion 18 Signed D W BLISS J K BARKES J J WOODWARD KCUT KEYBTJRK The following was sent this morning to each of the cabinet officers by the Presidents private secretary There is decided improvement in the Presidents condition this morning He slept very well during the night and his pulse at this hour is 86 which is lower than at any previous time Temperature and respiration normal The wound is doing well and is discharging freely and properly The Presidents appetite is still good and great care will continue to beZexercised in his diet Chicago 20 Washington special He is certainly going to get well That was the confident declaration made by Dr Bliss about sundown Yet the physicians are not willing to put any such confident declaration into their bul l tins and within twentyfour hours even have said they could not safely pre dict the wound would not terminate fatally fat-ally The doctors seem to have one language lan-guage for tne public and another for I private persons But the confide ce of the people in the recovery of the Presi dent which has existed for a week has not been shaken The President setup twenty minutes yesterday It was found that the pain in his back had disappeared but curious and some think suspicious I pains continue in his legs and the reason rea-son why suspicion is attached to these points by some of the physicians is that there is a remote fear that the President after his recovery may be weak in his legs He seems himself apprehensive of that as he has frequently asked his attendants at-tendants what they thought about it and has expressed an earnest wish to be able to stand UD to see whether or not his legs would still remain his servants The first sensation when the bullet struck him was that his knees gave way He seems to have retained that sensation ever since and still fears hig knees may give way TOO TONY Washington 20 Guitteau seems to I think now that Corkhill has gone and he can gel more privileges He told a guard this morning that he wanted three daily papers every day and better food than has been allowed him |
