Show GUI t1rEAU How 1Ie is lieiug Tamed Down Washington 20Prison fare and discipline have taken much of the starch out of Guitteau and have even had a wilting effect upon his inordinate vanity When first con I fined ho made frequent complaints I of his treatment He regarded himself him-self as an important personage a prisoner of state and demanded bet ter care and treatment than was bestowed 011 his fellow prisoners pris-oners whom he denominated common felons He protested against being put on a level with the other prisoners He says he was a gentleman accustomed to having the best fare His demands were often made in an insulting manner aud usually ignored He consumes every scrap of paper he can get in writing about himself He has not ceased to complain and demand better treatment treat-ment but his manner is changed He is more subdued and apparently begins to realize that others do not regard his crime in the same light he does The other day he complained com-plained that he did not get coffee enough The warden allowed him two cups at a meal while other prisoners got only one This revived his spirit of selfimportance and he forthwith began to put on airs again Then his extra allowance of coffee was cut off whereupon he wrote a lengthy letter to the warden couched in offensive language saying he was not fit to have charge of a man of such importance im-portance The warden paid no attention at-tention to the letter except to determine not to allow Guitteau another favor but confine him to the most rigerous prison treatment The warden and his deputy and the district attorney and his assistant are the only persons who are permitted per-mitted to exchange any words with the prisoner When it is necessary for one of those officials to see Guit teau he is brought into the wardens office locked inside with thb official and the guards stationed at the door Guitteau has abandoned all his foppishness At first in jail he was careful with his toilet but now comes into the wardens room when sent for sometimes only half dressed One time he appeared with only his shirt and pants on the pants rolled up and the last time he had on nothing but his pants Corkhills order to put him in solitary soli-tary confinement and shut him off from the sight of others could not be complied with as the jail has too many prisoners to admit of this besides the warden considers Guit teaus present mode of confinement about as satisfactory as can well be in a jail so full of prisoners Guitteau has no desire to escape He knows the danger he would incur in-cur outside from popular indignation indigna-tion He first heard that the President Presi-dent was getting well from the talk of the guards He anticipates a big sensation at his trial |
