Show HazeIKirk Last evening an immense audience audi-ence assembled at the Theatre to witness the first performance of Hazel Kirke a drama which as played by the Madison Square Company Com-pany has eclipsed any former dramas for the number of consecutive consecu-tive nights which it has been performed per-formed It has earned a wonderful reputation not by its merits alone however but by the manner in which it is performed by Madison Square Company The drama is a beautiful simple and most pathetic production capable of great dramatic effect such as can be given and yet appear truly natural and consistent The interest in the piece properly cen tres about Hazel Kirke the heroine and such a heroine in the hands of Miss Ellsler She infuses life poetry pathos and despair into the whole as to carry the audience with her But neither the acting of Miss Ellsler nor the strong points that attach to the characteron which the plot hangscan cope with the almost wonderful acting of Mr C W Couldock He drew all attention to him when on the stage and the interest at first awakened by the old man in his hands increased until the last act when it culminated in a wonderful wonder-ful sense of relief on the part of the whole audience He was recalled Mr Couldock is well known to Salt Lakers to be a star than whom in his line there is none brighter The entire support is firstclass and the play runs through with that smoothness smooth-ness which can only be acquired by constant and what might almost seem painful repetition The applause ap-plause was bounteous and the audience au-dience left delightednot alone with the piece itself for it is most beautiful and affectingbut with the remarkably skillful manner of its presentation and the uniform exellence of all the members of the troupe It will be given again this evening even-ing and at a matinee this afternoon |
