Show THE THEATRE First Appearance of Katie Putnam The theatre contained a very large audience yesterday evening the largest for a long time and we feel safe in saying that none of them were disappointed in their expectations expecta-tions of seeing a really firstclass entertainment The piece presented Little Nell and the Marchioness I is a dramatization of one of Dickens Dick-ens novels and the entire company I did it justice Those who are most familiar with that great authors writings will recognize the fact that he did not depend upon natural occurrences oc-currences so much as caricature f cr his effectshe did not present things as they are but as under highly imaginative circumstances they might be It is of course an impossibility im-possibility for any one who deals in fiction as a busnsss to be absolutely real he will make his points at the sacrifice of reason or anything elseand this will illustrate all we desire to say about the play of yesterday yes-terday evening individually considered con-sidered Katie Putnam is one of the most charming among what might be called the piquant actresses of the day To portray two characters in one piece so greatly at variance as the spirituelle and melancholy Nell and the romping ranting uncouth Marchioness and give satisfaction in both requires more than talent and Miss Putnam gave the fullest satisfaction as the applause ap-plause of the audience amply attested at-tested She is what would be called anywhere to use a society term decidedly de-cidedly nice and is as pleasant and captivating as possible The support was far above the average They all seemed imbued with the Dickens idea and carried it out in good stylethe preposterously preposter-ously longtailed clawhammer coat the elsewhere neverseen plug hat and air the paraphernalia figuring fig-uring conspicuously in the presentation presen-tation and showing that the actors had not merely studied their lines but the philosophy of the ir respective respec-tive parts as well Harry Emery a Salt Laker from way back was warmly welcomed when he made his appearance Tonight Lena the Madcap |
