Show i S FLOODS S i Tie Canyons Visited by Wat Spouts Clond Bursts or Mr Frinks Electrical Storms Hail Rain and Washouts Saturday and Sundays storms worked sad havoc in every canyon leading from this valley into the Wasatch Mountains unless it is Emigrationwhence no report has been received Ihe rainy season ill the mountains has been almost unprecedented un-precedented and the storms of Saturday and Sunday were the severest known in the Wasatch for seven years It has rained the greater part of the past two weeks and has rained heavily Very early on Sunday morning the clouds gathered thick in the vicinity of the halfway house in Parleys Canyon I Can-yon About 0 oclock when those at the house were eating breakfast a terrific storm such as might be called a cloud burst commenced just in the rear of the building In a short time the back of the house which was of lumber was knocked in and the rooms filled with three to four inches of water and mud and when the water departed about that much mud remained The placewas used as a drinking house and the force of the water carried away some barrels of whisky all those having faucets in them being lost The others were recovered afterwards af-terwards The loss is placed at 250 to 300 Though no other serious seri-ous breaks occurred the water swept upon the road in places and left a deposit of mud sand and grayel in some places almost a foot deep but did not render the road impassible In Big Cottonwood where there were so many pleasure seekers avery a-very heavy rainstorm the heaviest of several years todk place Saturday evening and Sunday morning On Sunday evening however a terrific hail storm came down the hailstones hail-stones it is said being as large as nutmegs or pigeon eggs and this again was succeeded by a fearful rain wellnigh driving out those intents in-tents On Saturday night the creek near the camps rose so high tbat aIl the food which had been kept close by on account of the coolness of the place was swept away and forced the campers to seek elsewhere for that which satisfies the inward yearnings incidental to mountain life even in wet weather A few came to this city Sunday and about fifty departed from Cottonwood on Monday coming by way of Alta The wagon road from Alta to the divide between Little and Big Cottonwood Cot-tonwood was a total wreck and horseback riding was the only means left for making the journey Qn Saturday night the same fearful storm which had visited vis-ited the other localities was also shared by Alta and Little Cottonwood Cotton-wood Canyon The water began to move one house in Alta and struck it so perceptibly that the family init had to run out for their lives It was not carried off however A serious washout took place in the tramway which was so bad that passengers either way had to be transferred A force of some thirty five to fifty men however so far completed the repairs by Monday that the cars were enabled to passover pass-over it The roads in Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood are said to have been so badly washed as to be almost impassible S The storm must also have been very severe in City Creek Canyon for the water not alone in the ditches but in the water mains was exceedingly muddy and altogether unfit for use for a time What is most fortunate is the fact that no lives were lost neither bjr the floods nor by the blinding flashes of lightning light-ning It seems that American Fork Canyon suffered worse than any of the other places as can be seen from the following PLEASANT GROVE UTAH August 15th 1881 Editors Herald American Fork Canyon was visited visi-ted yesterday by one of those waterspouts water-spouts the result is that the road is completely washed away every bridge in the canyon has passed out presto change The Presbyterian excursion that has been doing the canyon the last week are hemmed in and cannot get out until the road is repaired Great damage has been done to the farms below American Fork City Any amount of timber and debris is to be found on the trail of the storm Canyon and mill men hang their lips this morning At this early date full particulars cannot can-not be given B W I |
