with thee on earth Exceeds a thousand days of mirth Prayer by Elder F A Mitchell Choir sang the hymn on page 402 How dark and dismal was the day APOSTLE ERASTTTS SNOW arose The first thing presenting itself tony to-ny mind are the words of the Savior in administering the bread and wine He said this was a new covenant of his blood I believe one of the evangelists has written that he said this i a new testament in my blood the word testament being used here synonymously with covenant cov-enant The old Jewish biblical record is known by the Christian as the Old Testament and the doctrines doc-trines of Christ as the 2ew Testa i meat or the old and new cove uiants But the Christion people j I have somewhat crude ideas of what I constitutes the old and the new covenant cov-enant A Latterday Saints we call it the new and the everlasting I covenant Paul writes about it considerably con-siderably expounding to the people of his day a best he could considering I consid-ering the daikness of their mind ta enable them to dicer between the new and old commandments lie refers to Abraham and his sons as a figure to illustrate it and speaks of ish I mael the son of Ilagar the bondwoman I bond-woman as the likeness of the old covenant and to Isaac the child of promise born of fcarah the freewoman free-woman as the new covenant and the dawn of liberty Paul wished the Jewish people of his time to lay aside the old covenant and t cleave to the new and perfect law of liberty a they had done t the law of Moses or the law of carnal commandments com-mandments lie showed under the old covenant that there was no remission re-mission of sins without the shedding shed-ding of blood that of lambs and oilier beasts and birds this was tho law of sacrifice which was first given to father Adam and Lit was practiced by Cain and Abel This law was explained to Adam by the angel When Adam and Eve had been turned out of the garden of Eden Adam heard a voice which commanded him to build up an altar ind offer a sacrifice Adam did so ind to the question of the angel he said he did not know why lie should affer up a sacrifice but he had hfifin commanded and did so The l angel ltier explained to Adam the law of eternal salvation which should be accomplished through the sacrifice of Christ who should come in the meridian of time Hence the saying he was sacrificed as a lamb on the altar Adam was instructed to teach these things to his children which he did and they had their eyes opened by the holy ghost until they rejoiced and felt to thank God even for their transgressions And they learned that their transgression i was not an unmitigated evil So I long as Adam and his children enjoyed en-joyed the holy ghost and the light of truth and offered up their sacrifices on faith so long they enjoyed freedom free-dom and peace the remission of sins through the blood of the lamb that was to be shed and they looked upon the sacrifices they made merely is a type of the great sacrifice that was yet to be made for the salvation of mankind Their annual sacrifices were no more to them than is the partaking of the bread and water to u We receive these things a reminders re-minders to teach it to our children i that when they take the bread and the water they may know of what it i the emblem When roses was called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt God designed de-signed to make them a nation that should befree indeed through Christ Jesus if they would receive liberty and the plans of salvation and the perfect law of freedom was taught to them but they were too hardhearted hard-hearted and too ignorant to receive them Moses was reared up for the purpose of performing his part in the world his mother knowing the destiny of her son and he becoming of age also knew it and preferred to go forth and leave Pharaohs household and be known and suffer with the children of Israel Moses went abroad to witness the condition of his people He was grieved to the heart with the sufferings suffer-ings servitudes and oppression and finding an Egytian master unjustly ibti > e one of his people he slew them the-m The next day he saw a quarrel between two of his breth ren and in endavoring to make peace > between them the one that was in the wrong asked if Moses would kill him a he had done the Egyptian the day before Moses then had his eyes opened and he saw that his brethren knew him not and that the time for their deliverance iverance had not come So he fled for forty years At the end of that time God appeared to Moses and told him to go back to Egypt to deliver the children of Israel from Pharaoh and his host Pharaoh and his peo pIe were warned and instructed and yet they rebelled against God until at the last effort to hold Israel in bondage they perished at the Red Sea while the children of Israel were led through the water Here is an exemplification of the principle prin-ciple of baptism for the deliverance from sin and it shows the doctrine of Christ i a means to life to those that receive and an end to death to those who reject it By all these means God endeavored to enlighten the mind of his people by figures as veil a by simple truths These lessons did the Lord aim to instruct the children of Israel in his plans and wishes But we turn to see whether the world received these revelations 1 re-velations The Scriptures will tell u that a few did receive and understand under-stand those things and were saved Jut a great many had their minds closed and their hearts so veiled that the ceremonial laws given them b y Moses were but slightly understood under-stood and the veil that was ever the temple was but a likeness of the veil over their hearts Therefore God gave unto them the law of carnal car-nal commandment because of their unbelief and a part of it was bondage bond-age and under it a man should be punished and it was an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth Had they received the doctrines taught by Moses they would have lived by the law of carnal commandments They withheld their tithing and the prophets were under the necessity of rebuking them and one of their last prophets accused them of robbing rob-bing God and told them they had done so in withholding their tithes and their offerings Israel had relapsed re-lapsed into this state of dead forms when Jesus came among them He found the world sleeping in darkness dark-ness He found his ow people as blind in relation to him a the leo of Goshen were blind t Moses They counted him an imposter a winebibber and persecuted him even to death Now I said the Christians seem to have very crude ideas about the old and new covenant cove-nant yet the same covenant that is revealed to us i that which was revealed re-vealed to Father Adam hence it i called the new and everlasting covenant I cove-nant It is the same priesthood which Christ taught and which was understood by Father Adam Now we will ask if the Latterday Saints have received a different covenant or gospel from what was taught to Adam Abraham Moses and Qthers No And did God preach this gospel to AbnUiamj and r Abraham not niidii fantl i Xb at aU Whii God commanded Ajnthtni to take Isaac and offer him for a aiince he designed to leach the v ohl l a lesson while lie should Let the depth of Abrahams faith Now this gospel that was hen lo Aiwiihnm is given to us uid wu calculated to teach all the great pt of faith without whi hal h-al our wori arc dead Faith keeps alive the body and this inspiration of the Lord in the body paves the
