Show ODonnel or Phelan Which I Kansas City 3Belief is current among Irishmen that ODonnell who killed James Carey at Port Elizabeth last Monday la identical with Captain Thomas Phelan of this city Phelan left here for Dublin about two months ago ostensibly osten-sibly to look alter a legacy left by some distant relatives but little is k own of his subsequent movements move-ments except that he arrived in Dublin during the progress of the Pco3nx murder tual The descrip KJU as given of ODonnell by the Cape Town correspondent tallies exactly with that of Phelan he being six feet high about 45 years of age dark hair blue eyes and with sligut paralyisis of one hand Phelan has resided in this city about 25 years He has taken an active part in local politics and been known as an avowed nationalist nation-alist He was a man of remarkable courage and withal an expert with a rifle or a pistol He has given some public exhibitions in that direction di-rection He received a wound in the hand spoken of upon one of these occasions He served as a union soldier during the war bjing captain of a company from this country The matter although talked of among Phelana fiiends has been kept very quiet and nothing of the suspicions has yet appeared in the newspapers An intimate friend said tonight that while he had no actual information yet he felt confident that Phelan was the man who killed Carey He stated that it was understood before Phelan left that he should travel under the name of ODon neUCape Cape Town ODonnell who killed Carey the informer was committed for trial on a charge of wilful murder In the ordinary courss of events hewill be tried at Port Elizabeth in October At the final examination of ODonnell the box was produced belonging to the prisoner labeled Capo Town and containg a wood out of Carey and a paper of American citizenship dated Toronto November 1870 j Careys son was recalled and denied that Kelly the Irish passenger on the steamer Kinfauna Castle was identical with Kavanagh He testified testi-fied that his father was standing and talking to ODonnell when he witness wit-ness saw the latter draw a revolver and fire ene shot He witness then ran to fetch his fathers revolver fill mother was holding his father when the third shot was fired ODonnell declared that Carey first drew a revolver re-volver which he ODonnell seized and fired at Carey in selfdefense He described himself as Patrick ODonnell aged 43 a native of Goodsell county Donegan a laborer formerly of Butler |
