Show SHOOTING AT BUTTE Major Ken ioott Kills a Man at Butte City On Sunday morning Prof S A Kennicott well known here killed a man at Butte City Mont The Butte City InterMountain InterMoun-tain in an extra gives the following account of the affair This morning as the faro games in Kings saloon were surrounded by a dense throng of men the sudden sud-den report of a pistol caused widespread wide-spread alarm Consternation ensued when it was learned that a human being had in all probability been killed The time was 125 am and from the statement of witnesses of the dreadful affair the circumstances circum-stances are about as follows Geo Odeil was the first man to take in the danger of the situation and is probably the only man who saw the shooting That gentleman states that at 123 oclock Prof S A Ken nicott backed into the saloon from tha sidewalk closely followed by Jesse Sanders a wellknown member of the sporting fraternity better known in this city as Tex The latter was making threatening demonstrations and Kennicott was warning him not to approach unless he desired to get hurt The two men were about eight feet apart When Kennicott reached the east end of the bar Tex was near the I centre of it and was in the act of springing forward with the intention I inten-tion of disarming or attacking Ken nicott when the latter raised his pistol and fired Tex fell immedi i I ately to the floor without the power I to utter a word or make a motion j Kennicott lowering his pistol and showing no unusual excitement de I l 1 liberateiy walked out of the house 1 and delivered himself into the cus i i tody of an officer As soon as Tex j fell to the floor Dave Allen and ja number of others rushed forward I for-ward and lifting up the wounded man placed him on a faro table j near the door where he expired in I a little less than two minutes Before I Be-fore drawing his lat breath it is stated that a bystander asked the I wounded man who shot him to which question Tex replied almost inaudibly Kennicott It is also I reported that when Tex was removed re-moved from the place where he fell I a loaded sixshooter was found by his side which report if true explains ex-plains Kemiicotts motive for shooting I shoot-ing An examination of Texs injuries in-juries showed that the bullet entered the right side of the neck passed through the trachea or windpipe to the left side of the neck and rang ing downward cut the carotid artery art-ery and lodged in the joint of the left shoulder Dr Johnston states that death must have been almost instantaneous as the lungs immediately immedi-ately filled with blood preventing respiration The news of the shooting created intense excitement on the street I which was thronged until morning with crowds of men eagerly discussing I discuss-ing the different versions of the tragedy As soon as possible after the shooting the saloon in which I the affrayoccnrred was closedand preparations were at once made to I remove the body of Tex to the police po-lice court room where Drs Johnston Johns-ton and Strom held a post mortem examination the revelations of which are recorded above Concerning Concern-ing Kennicotts provocation to take I the life of Tex public opinion is somewhat divided One rumor is to the effect that the deceased had I on two occasions made a proposition to Kennicott to assist in the execution execu-tion of a plot to rob Donnell Clark C Larabies bank and that owing to Kennicotts refusal to lend his cooperation co-operation to the scheme a ued was engendered between the two men which culminated in the killing of TexAnother Another widely circulated report is to the effect that Kennicott was actuated solely by a desire to defend himself from a man whom he feared would do him some injury and who armed with a drawn pistol was angrily advancing upon him with that intention when the shooting occurred On the other hand it is stated by the friends of the dead man that Kennicotts action was entirely en-tirely unprovoked that he picked the quarrel and should be held accountable ac-countable for the crime which resulted re-sulted Which one if any of these reports is true cannot at present be determined deter-mined but will probably be ascertained ascer-tained at Kennicotts preliminary examination which most likely will be held tomorrow It is well for the public to suspend a verdict as to the justifiableness of the shooting until all the facts for and against the prisoner shall be brought out in a court of justice It may be best to give here the substance of a private letter received re-ceived on Tuesday tlfucll as the affair is to be regretted re-gretted public opinion seems very strong in favor of Kennicott From an eyewitness to the affair I was I told Kennicott backed into the saloon sa-loon defending himself with a drawn revolver cautioning Tex not to follow him and when further retreat re-treat was impossible Kennicott stood at bay a moment and fired only when he felt it was his time I was told also that K was quite sober which also he affirmed to me this morning and his appearance indicated indi-cated the truth of his statement Likely a preliminary examination will be held tomorrow when the facts will be brought out I I |
