Show THE CROAKERS OF UTAH How the Pious and Wise Ones Sacrifice Themselves for the Good of this Benighted Territory SALT LAKE CITY Feb 5 1881 Editors Herald A little learning It a dangerous thing Drink deep or taste not the Pyerian spring There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain Jut drinking largely sobers us again I was reminded of the foregoing lines by noticing the effect jour very logical and truthful article of last Sunday seemed to have upon the cerebral organism of your downtown contemporary Ydu have certainly presented the matter faihfully and if you have committed any error it is certainly one of omission The cor eclneaa of your conol isions is sell evident and tbe individuals who are retarding progress here are those wreckers Among lawyers a happy way of designating it those im eoumoua and briefless legal lumi mries and otficeless carpetbag politicians ticians all greedy for spoil together with a few religious fanatics the whole madly desirous though the die integration of society here and the political proscription of its members of indulging in official pro esaional and religious snobbery to say nothing of the camp followers and caterers to infamythese pure allies in the regeneration of Utah who claim such cloeo relationship to them the whole tribe true to their inheritance of love for the almighty dollar which blazes an ignis fatuui Jet us hope ahead in their tortuous pathways the summum bonum the Al pbs and Omega of the miserable and godless civilization they so warmly espouse A plutocratic civilization which in a couple of decades has reduced wages to starvation prices and filled the country with tramps a civilization whose progress is a Juggernaut Jug-gernaut car crushing under its mon shone and inhuman wheels all the finer moralities these prophets of perfection which are so essential to lomplfctenesa of character the welfare wel-fare of society the happiness of man and the basis of that integrity and conscientiousness which are the forerunners runners of true progress and upon which a true civilization must ever eel eelWho wants to interfere with legitimate legiti-mate pursuits here And I am not certain but that a little theocracy a little of Gods rule among us would be > a blessing and very opportune considering that we have had so much that is hatefully Satanic What a benighted race the Mormons are to be sure but I have heard more rank barbarism proclaimed aa the work of God in the other Christian Chris-tian churches on a single occasion than in years of tabernacle sermonizing sermon-izing while some of the discourses at the latter place by men filling lowly lodtions contentedly have been of such an elevated character as to proclaim their authors in qualities of mental and moral greatness the equals of a Gincinnatns a Cato or an Antonnius and who it were but reasonable onable to expect would rival them in patriotism and exalted conduct were equal opportunities afforded them Their theology may be detective tie in the matter of plural marriage but to believe that men possessing such a high order of intelligence would wish to subject their own flesh and blood to what they feel to be unjust and infamous is without the pale of reason and if it be true that the tree be known by its fruit which I believe to be a true test then the Celestial system has certainly borne some very charming Irnitfrait that will compare most favorably with that of a civilization that cherishes Conklingism Beech erism Murravism and Kate Surague ism and Talmage was right when be characterized the religion of the day as the sanctimonious fUshless pulpit mmdrum of the past It is not by vi1lifying and endeavoring endeavor-ing to lessen the self respect of individuals indi-viduals that we can ever improve their morals or elevate them in the social scale Such a course will never be pursued by the wise and the good and is only the method of the vicious and depraved who foolishly hope thereby to win from the un discerning a recognition of su periority or tolerance for themselves Moreover the practice of this lye tem while possible in an unsettled country becomes wholly impracticable impractica-ble where populetion is dene many being restrained in that case from embracing matrimony at all ButS But-S tbu ia trespassing on the laws of pop ulation a thorough investigation pi which a higher civilization tending f towards the abolishment war and many other present evils demands at the hands 01 the humanitarian the philosopher and the statesman A dpI d-pI the system would have never goi e into operation here could it have been foreseen how soon it would be brought into contact with its present extrsncous and corroding influences Bside it imposes cares and responsibilities respon-sibilities which the lustfully inclined outside Christians have no desire to assume and which is i a very strong point in support of the parity of intention in-tention which It involves If the country outside of Utah la so very prosperous why do not these chronic faultfinders emigrate there But those pure selfsacrificing patriots have a mission of regencra tion to perform herebut the pretense pre-tense will bardly stick and the country coun-try will believe and believe correctly that behind this pretended generosity and selfeacrifico there are selfish mercenary motives which they feel cannot find a gratification so readily elsewhere A GEKTILE |
